Harvey Elliott’s move to Valencia was supposed to provide the fresh start his career desperately needed. Just three weeks into his Spanish adventure, however, the Liverpool midfielder is already facing another battle for minutes.

Elliott completed a season-long loan move to Valencia on deadline day, with Liverpool confirming the 23-year-old would spend the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign at Mestalla. 

But reports in Spain have now raised concerns over his physical condition. According to Spanish outlet MARCA, Elliott arrived at Valencia short of his ideal playing condition following an unusual summer at Liverpool. The midfielder featured for just 190 minutes during Andoni Iraola’s first pre-season before eventually being allowed to leave. 

The result is that Valencia are effectively giving Elliott another pre-season during the international break, with a demanding individual programme designed to bring him up to speed.

It is another frustrating chapter for a player once considered one of Liverpool’s brightest young talents.

Elliott has made three appearances for Valencia so far, all from the bench, totalling just 85 minutes. Reports suggest his current fitness levels have restricted how heavily Carlos Corberán can use him. 

The situation becomes even more disappointing when placed alongside last season.

Elliott’s loan spell at Aston Villa never really got going, with the midfielder playing only 277 minutes across the campaign. His opportunities eventually dried up amid the circumstances surrounding a potential permanent transfer. 

He therefore headed to Spain looking for something he has lacked for more than a year, consistent football.

There can be little doubt about Elliott’s ability. Since joining Liverpool from Fulham in 2019, he has accumulated 149 appearances and 15 goals for the Reds, collecting two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups among his honours. 

He was also named Player of the Tournament as England won the European Under-21 Championship in 2025. 

That player has not simply disappeared. Valencia now have three weeks to work on Elliott’s conditioning before domestic football resumes. For a midfielder still contracted to Liverpool until 2028, this loan increasingly feels bigger than simply gaining experience abroad. 

After a lost year at Villa and a difficult beginning in Spain, Elliott needs regular football again. First, though, he has to get himself ready to play it.
