Liverpool FC Loan Watch: How Harvey Elliott and Every Liverpool Loanee Performed Away From Anfield

After 56 total games across all competitions, Liverpool FC's 25/26 season came to an end in a 1-1 draw against Brentford in front of the Anfield faithful. While many supporters are already looking forward to the summer transfer window, it is important to look at how Liverpool's nine on-loan players fared away from the club. 

Harvey Elliott was the most high-profile departure last summer, joining fellow Premier League side Aston Villa. A move which was widely anticipated to be made permanent, subject to appearances for the Villains.

However, it quickly became apparent that Villa manager Unai Emery would not see him as a mainstay in his plans moving forward. During the January transfer window, the Spaniard expressed the club was “not convinced” to trigger the buyout clause.

Elliott was limited to just nine appearances for the club, scoring a singular goal in a penalty shootout defeat to Brentford in the third round of the EFL Cup. The midfielder would close out his miserable loan in a memorable fashion, with Aston Villa defeating German outfit Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League Final 0-3. Elliott will return to pre-season for the upcoming season, Slot confirmed.

Remaining in England, Lewis Koumas endured an eventful season across two clubs in the EFL Championship. Initially joining Birmingham City on a season-long loan in August, featuring 25 times and scoring once against eventual league winners Coventry City in a 3-2 victory.

His loan was, however, terminated in January with a lack of game time cited as the pivotal factor. Koumas went on to join Hull City for the remainder of the season, which proved to be a success. The winger featured 19 times for the Tigers, scoring three times, including on his debut versus Blackburn Rovers in a 0-1 victory.

Hull City would go on to reach the play-off final and win against Middlesbrough, seeing them return to the top flight and face the Reds next season.

Fellow Championship side Charlton Athletic attracted young full-back Luke Chambers, who would feature in 18 out of the 19 matches the Addicks played until the final day. The Preston-born defender recorded an assist in a 0-2 victory against relegated Leicester City to aid Charlton’s survival hopes.

Dropping down once again to League One, two youngsters enjoyed indifferent success. Calum Scanlon joined Cardiff City in February, helping them return to the Championship following relegation last season. The left-back featured eight times for the Bluebirds en route to setting a new club record for the highest points tally.

Further North, Isaac Mabaya enjoyed a positive start to life at Wigan Athletic in August featuring in their opening three matches which saw the young Red keep a clean sheet on his full debut versus Notts County.

Yet, that debut would be cut short in the first half, suffering a season-ending ACL injury. Manager at the time Ryan Lowe admitted he was “gutted” to be losing a player he had been “monitoring for years”.

Up in Scotland, Luca Stephenson re-joined Dundee United for a second consecutive season, having penned a new long-term deal for the Reds in the summer of 2025. The midfielder recorded ten goal involvements in 29 games, which saw the side finish mid-table, three points above bitter rivals Dundee FC.

Moving overseas, goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros headed to Amsterdam, joining Dutch giants Ajax, and quickly established himself as their number one. The Czech international made 26 appearances, keeping ten clean sheets in a comparatively poor season for the club. He, however, missed the final three months of the season with a serious knee injury, marking an abrupt end.

He wasn’t the only Red to head to Ajax, as James McConnell joined on a season-long loan before being frozen out the squad in January, picking up an injury and subsequently returning to Liverpool. The young midfielder made seven appearances for the club.

Finally, Kostas Tsimikas left the club on loan to AS Roma following the signing of fellow left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. The Greek featured 25 times for the Italian giants, providing one assist in a 1-2 victory over Nice in the UEFA Europa League. Roma went on to clinch a UEFA Champions League spot on the final Serie A matchday, with Tsimikas playing his part over the season.

With the recent announcement that stalwart Andy Robertson would be departing the club after nine successful years, the left back will return to the club with less competition ahead, looking to re-establish himself. In Arne Slot's pre-match Chelsea press conference, the Dutch manager confirmed plans to re-integrate the defender.
