Liverpool’s surprise move for Ronald Araújo is now entering its final stages, with the Barcelona defender travelling to Merseyside to complete his medical ahead of a season-long loan at Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano reports Araújo is flying to Merseyside today before undergoing his medical with Liverpool. Romano also reports the agreement includes Liverpool covering the defender’s full salary, while a €55 million option to buy has also been included in the deal.

The move has arrived somewhat out of the blue, but it makes considerable sense for Liverpool’s immediate defensive situation. The Reds have endured a difficult summer at centre-back, with injuries affecting their options and Ibrahima Konaté having departed for Real Madrid. 

Araújo therefore provides Andoni Iraola with an experienced, physically imposing defender capable of stepping straight into Premier League football. 

At 27, the Uruguay international brings considerable experience at the highest level. His aggressive defending, recovery pace and willingness to engage attackers could make him an intriguing addition to an Iraola side expected to place significant demands on its defenders.

The loan arrangement also gives Liverpool an opportunity to assess Araújo at close quarters before deciding whether to make the move permanent. If he rediscovers his best form on Merseyside, the reported €55m purchase option could become a very interesting proposition next summer. 

And Liverpool supporters may not have to wait long to see their potential new defender in the famous red shirt.

Liverpool are due to face Como at Anfield on Sunday 16th August, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm BST. The fixture is the final currently announced public friendly of the Reds’ pre-season programme, meaning Araújo could potentially make his first appearance in front of the Anfield faithful if his medical, registration and fitness are completed in time. 

For Liverpool fans, the possibility of seeing Araújo walk onto the Anfield pitch just days after his arrival would add another layer of excitement to what is already an intriguing summer under Iraola.

This is more than a short-term defensive patch. Liverpool have given themselves the chance to discover whether one of Europe’s most recognisable defenders can make Merseyside feel like home.
