Liverpool academy and England youngster Josh Abe is set to sign a new deal at Anfield, fending off interest from several other Premier League clubs.
The youngster (15) who joined the club at just the age of four has impressed senior officials with displays at Kirkby for the academy. Per The Athletic’s James Pearce, Josh Abe has ‘signed scholarship terms with a pre-contract agreement in place for a three-year professional deal’ when he turns 17.
Abe’s future has long been a talking point for the Reds, with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and several other Premier League sides having vied for his signature.
He is said to have been offered pro terms at a Premier League club, understood to be Manchester City, worth in excess of £50,000. Liverpool introduced a salary cap of £40,000 for academy players back in 2016, to prevent their starlets earning ‘too much, too soon’.
Despite this, the winger believes his path to the first team and becoming an established player at the football club is of a greater possibility and interest than money.
What sort of player is Josh Abe?
The 15-year-old winger has been playing for the club’s U18s under newly appointed boss Simon Wiles. He primarily plies his trade on the right, but can also do so on the left. He is a pacy forward who is technically gifted and isn’t afraid to take on his man, but can also be composed when needed.
The youngster netted eight times in an impressive campaign, including a 24-minute hattrick versus Leeds United in the U18s Premier League.
Abe was rewarded for his stellar performances with the U18s with a substitute appearance in Liverpool’s narrow 2-1 knockout defeat to MSK Zilina in the UEFA Youth League.
It’s not the first time Liverpool have had to fend off potential suitors for a young winger, with Rio Ngumoha being in demand. The youngster endured a breakout season in the Premier League this season, netting against Fulham and Newcastle respectively.
The forward won Premier League Debutant of the Season as well as Scholar of the Year. Liverpool Football Club await a bright future, in particularly on the wings, with the club hopeful both will represent them successfully for a long time to come.
