Liverpool have reportedly informed Cody Gakpo’s representatives that they are prepared to keep the Dutch international at Anfield unless a replacement is secured with Ismaila Sarr potentially holding the key to his future.
Manchester City Move On Hold
Fabrizio Romano previously reported Gakpo had agreed personal terms with Manchester City on Saturday, opening the door to a remarkable late move away from Liverpool.
However, the Reds are unwilling to sanction his departure without first strengthening their attacking options.
The situation now appears closely connected to Liverpool’s pursuit of Sarr, with the Crystal Palace winger emerging as a potential replacement.
Should Liverpool fail to make progress in negotiations, Gakpo could remain on Merseyside beyond the transfer deadline.

Crucially, Romano reports that Gakpo would also be happy to stay if Liverpool ultimately decide to close the door on his exit. That gives the club some breathing room during what could be a frantic final stage of the window.
The 27-year-old has been an important member of Liverpool’s attack since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023. Capable of playing across the front line, Gakpo’s versatility has repeatedly proved useful, although his strongest performances have often come when operating from the left.

Losing him without a replacement would therefore represent a significant gamble. Sarr, meanwhile, would offer Liverpool something slightly different. The Senegal international possesses explosive pace, Premier League experience and the ability to attack space behind defensive lines. His directness could make him an intriguing option in Andoni Iraola’s system, particularly if Liverpool want greater speed and aggression.
Yet there is still plenty that needs to fall into place. Manchester City’s interest adds another factor. Gakpo agreeing terms suggests there is genuine willingness on the player’s side to consider the switch, but Liverpool remain in control while he is under contract.
Domino Effect
It leaves the Reds facing a transfer domino effect, secure Sarr and Gakpo could potentially be allowed to leave; fail to land the Palace attacker and the Dutchman may be going nowhere.
With the deadline approaching, Liverpool have seemingly drawn their line in the sand.
Gakpo might be ready for Manchester City, but until Liverpool find the right man to replace him, Anfield’s exit door remains firmly shut.
