Liverpool may have resisted signing a midfielder in the summer, but the club's recruitment team are still keeping a close eye on potential options as they plan for the future.
Despite calls from many Liverpool supporters for a midfield signing following Curtis Jones' departure, the Reds opted against bringing in a direct replacement. Instead, the club chose to place greater trust in Trey Nyoni, believing increased first-team opportunities for the highly rated youngster could help fill part of the void while continuing his development within the first-team environment.
While there is no immediate need for a midfield overhaul, uncertainty surrounding Alexis Mac Allister's long-term future means Liverpool are continuing to monitor for additions to the midfield.
Lamine Camara And Alex Scott Remain On Liverpool's Midfield Shortlist
According to Florian Plettenberg, Monaco's Lamine Camara and Bournemouth's Alex Scott are two players currently on Liverpool's shortlist for the central midfield position.
Camara is no stranger to transfer speculation involving the Reds. The Senegalese international was linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer, although Liverpool ultimately opted against pursuing a deal.
The 22-year-old then came close to joining Chelsea on deadline day before the move collapsed at the final hurdle, leaving him at Monaco.
Scott has also emerged as a player Liverpool hold in high regard. The Bournemouth midfielder has continued to impress in the Premier League and could have an additional advantage when it comes to a potential move to Anfield, having previously worked under Andoni Iraola on the south coast.
That existing relationship may help explain why Liverpool are increasingly being viewed as a leading contender for his signature.
Felix Nmecha Admired But Not A Priority
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha is another player Liverpool are known to admire. The German international has established himself as an important figure for the Bundesliga side and possesses many of the qualities required to succeed in the Premier League.
However, while Liverpool hold Nmecha in high regard, current reports suggest he is not considered a priority target at this stage. Instead, attention appears to be focused more heavily on alternative midfield options as the club continue planning for the future.
That does not necessarily rule out a move further down the line, but for now, it seems Liverpool's recruitment department have other names higher on their list.
Author's Verdict
Liverpool's priority should still be agreeing a new contract with Alexis Mac Allister. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, the Argentine has arguably been Liverpool's best midfielder since Iraola’s arrival.
If Alexis Mac Allister signs a new deal and commits his future to Liverpool, I think the Reds would likely only need to pursue one of Lamine Camara or Alex Scott.
On paper, that would leave Liverpool with five senior players competing for two midfield positions, but the numbers are not as excessive as they might initially appear.
Dominik Szoboszlai has increasingly shown he can operate in multiple roles and, against certain opponents, there is a strong argument that right-back brings out the best in some of his attributes.
Having that flexibility would allow Liverpool to add another quality midfielder without overcrowding the squad. It would strengthen competition in the middle of the park while also providing additional cover elsewhere, giving Iraola more tactical options across a demanding campaign.
