Manchester United make Ferdi Kadioglu enquiry but talk of an agreement is premature

Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry about Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ferdi Kadioglu, but suggestions that a deal has already been agreed appear to be premature.

United are continuing their search for a new left-back before the transfer window closes, with Luke Shaw currently the club’s only established senior option in that position. Kadioglu has now emerged as another name on their shortlist as Michael Carrick’s side assess their options. (Turkish Football)

Reports from Turkey had claimed that United were closing in on a deal for the 26-year-old, with one report suggesting a transfer worth around £40 million had already been agreed.

However, those claims have subsequently been challenged.

According to Turkish-Football, Manchester United have made a formal enquiry regarding Kadioglu’s availability, but there is currently no agreement between United and Brighton. The report says United have contacted Brighton’s hierarchy to establish the financial feasibility of a potential transfer rather than submitting a formal bid. (Turkish Football)

That distinction is important.

An enquiry represents an initial step in negotiations. It allows United to establish Brighton’s stance, their valuation of the player and whether a deal could realistically be completed before the deadline. It does not mean that personal terms have been agreed, a transfer fee has been accepted or that Kadioglu is on his way to Old Trafford.

The confusion appears to have stemmed from reports in the Turkish media claiming that United had already reached an agreement to sign the defender for £40m. Those reports generated significant excitement, but the latest information suggests there is still considerable work to do before the transfer can be considered close. (Football365)

Why Kadioglu appeals to United

Kadioglu would nevertheless make considerable sense as a target.

United are actively looking for reinforcements at left-back, having seen their pursuit of Newcastle’s Lewis Hall prove difficult. Other alternatives, including Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, have also been linked with the club. (Football365)

Kadioglu offers versatility as well as experience at the highest level. Since joining Brighton from Fenerbahce in 2024, he has established himself as an important member of the squad and was reportedly named the club’s player of the year last season. He also has the ability to operate in several positions, something that could appeal to Carrick as he continues to reshape United’s squad. (centredevils)

There is also a previous connection between Kadioglu and United. The club reportedly held talks with the player’s representatives in 2024 while he was still at Fenerbahce, before he ultimately chose Brighton. (centredevils)

Brighton hold the key

For now, Brighton remain in control of the situation.

Kadioglu is understood to be settled on the south coast and is not actively pushing for a transfer despite the reported interest from United. That makes the next stage particularly important: United must determine whether Brighton are willing to sell and, if so, what price would be required. (Turkish Football)

Brighton’s reported interest in signing Young Boys left-back Jaouen Hadjam has also been interpreted as possible preparation for Kadioglu’s departure, although that should not be taken as confirmation that the Turkish international is leaving. (centredevils)

There is another financial factor to consider. Fenerbahce reportedly retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause from Kadioglu’s move to Brighton, meaning the Turkish club would benefit from any future transfer. (centredevils)

Agreement? Not yet

The headline surrounding Kadioglu therefore needs some context.

Manchester United’s interest appears to be genuine, and the club have reportedly made an enquiry. But an enquiry is a long way from an agreement.

Claims of a £40m deal being completed have circulated, yet the latest reporting indicates that United are still assessing the possibility of signing the defender and have not reached an agreement with Brighton. (Turkish Football)

With the transfer deadline approaching, the situation could develop quickly. United clearly need another option at left-back and Kadioglu is a player who fits the profile they are considering.

But for now, the most accurate description is simple: Manchester United have made an enquiry for Ferdi Kadioglu. A transfer agreement has not been reached, and talk of an imminent £40m move is premature.
