Sir Alex Ferguson has made his feelings clear on Manchester United’s plans to build a new stadium, backing the club’s ambition to create a modern home while acknowledging the importance of preserving its historic identity.
The legendary former manager believes United must be willing to embrace change if they are to remain among the biggest clubs in world football. When the club unveiled its plans for a new 100,000-capacity stadium in March 2025, Ferguson stressed that United should always strive for excellence, both on and off the pitch.
“Manchester United should always strive for the best in everything it does, on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium we play in,” Ferguson said.
He also recognised the emotional significance of leaving Old Trafford, a ground that has been United’s home since 1910 and the setting for countless historic moments throughout the club’s history.
Despite those memories, Ferguson believes the opportunity to build a new home is one the club must be brave enough to take.
Ferguson Backs a New Era for Manchester United
During his remarkable 26-year spell as manager, Ferguson helped transform United into one of the most successful clubs in football history, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.
Old Trafford became synonymous with his era of dominance, witnessing unforgettable European nights, title celebrations and some of the greatest players ever to wear the famous red shirt.
However, football has continued to evolve, with clubs investing heavily in their stadiums, facilities and matchday experiences. Ferguson’s comments reflect the view that United must keep pace with those developments while maintaining the traditions that make the club special.
The proposed stadium, with a target capacity of 100,000, would give United a significantly larger venue and the opportunity to create a new generation of memories for supporters.
For Ferguson, the challenge is to build for the future without losing sight of the club’s extraordinary past.
