A fax machine's failure rerouted a World Cup star's destiny, costing United a future legend and altering a Champions League dynasty.
Most people remember that bizarre episode in which David de Gea did not sign for Real Madrid in the summer of 2015. The fax did not arrive on time, and the Spanish goalkeeper had to remain at Manchester United. However, many do not remember that Keylor Navas was collateral damage.
With the arrival of the former Atletico Madrid player, the white club had decided that the Costa Rican would move the other way and join the Red Devils. But, logically, when one deal fell through, the other also fell through, and everything remained as it was.
Far from being frustrated or upset, Keylor took it with "great peace and calm." That is what he says on his official YouTube channel, where he has begun to review his life: "At that moment, I was very calm. Yes, I was disappointed that the team had decided I would leave, and it was a very good opportunity for my career.
Before leaving for Valdebebas, I prayed with my wife and told her that God's will be done. He is the only one who can make a fax not work, and it literally happened that way," he begins, laughing.
And he continues: "They gave me medical exams, they told me, 'Go to the airport, there's a plane that will take you, but don't board yet.' Well, total madness. The Madrid doctor says to me, 'You're very calm' with everything that's been set in motion. I surrendered everything, and God has control of everything, and I felt at peace and calm.
The people from Madrid called and said it was closed and that it didn't arrive. They started shouting, 'No, it can't be,' and calling each other. I waited for everyone to calm down a bit and said, 'Well, then I can go,' and I went home with my wife."
"At that moment, it was like, 'Tomorrow, training.' Rather, that filled me with a desire inside to say, 'If I stayed, it was because God wanted it, and here I will give my very best.' I try to think positively, and there was no feeling of revenge or rebellion, or of getting angry or anything; rather, it was like, now, to prove that I am better. It was like nothing happened here," he concludes.
