Manchester United targets ignite a transfer tug-of-war. Can they outbid rivals and secure Champions League football to land midfield stars?

Manchester United currently sits third in the Premier League table, but the recent defeat to Newcastle has served as a reminder of how fragile their position remains. The club has reportedly identified midfield as its priority for the summer transfer window, as a recent analysis of their transfer strategy shows they have signed only two pure midfielders in the last eight years.

Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson has emerged as a key figure on United's list of targets. The 23-year-old, who has impressed Thomas Tuchel enough to start alongside Declan Rice for the England national team heading into the World Cup, has been on United's radar since his standout performance in the 2-2 draw at the City Ground earlier this season.

However, while United are interested in Anderson, well-informed sources claim the club could not compete with Manchester City, the favorite to sign him, on salary unless they return to the Champions League, according to The Sun. Without the financial benefits and prestige of the competition, the Red Devils risk being outperformed by their local rivals in the race to sign the former Newcastle player.

Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton's situation is even more definitive. The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the most composed playmakers in the division, frequently standing out against United in recent seasons. Despite United's narrow 2-1 victory last week at Old Trafford, Wharton's performance further solidified his status as a priority target.

The 22-year-old is expected to leave Crystal Palace in the summer, but is only interested in joining a club that plays in the Champions League. This stance leaves United no margin for error in the final months of the season, as failing to qualify for the tournament would see their chances of bringing the highly rated youngster to the Theater of Dreams evaporate.
