Maguire, Shaw, and Mainoo's remarkable resurgence fuels English hope for Thomas Tuchel, proving doubters wrong and shining a light on the pitch's resurgence.

Thomas Tuchel oversaw Manchester United's administrative operations in 2024, when he was interviewed by the Executive Carousel. Two years later, what his new first-line directorial team is achieving could represent for the English coach the equivalent of three World Cup signings.

Those doubts that Tuchel harbored during his protests before the match against the United ownership still exist, but what is happening on the pitch now sheds light on the background.

And emerging from the shadows are three Englishmen at the center of the resurgence: Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Kobbie Mainoo. None of them have played under Tuchel. Until recently, neither Maguire nor Mainoo were playing for United.

But in Michael Carrick, the former England midfielder, and Steve Holland, assistant to the Three Lions for eight years under Gareth Southgate, United's English contingent has new allies. So too, by extension, does Tuchel.

Maguire's resurgence in the problematic center-back position, in particular, should give the German reason to reconsider his view that the 32-year-old player is a former international. Here, he was powerful and mobile and marshaled United's defense during the nine minutes of added time in which they had to defend a one-goal lead.

After what proved to be Benjamin Sesko's winning goal in the 93rd minute, Maguire ran to the touchline not to join his teammates' dizzying celebrations, but to join a tactical meeting.

Harry Maguire (left), Luke Shaw (center), and Kobbie Mainoo (right) were brilliant in the win over Fulham.

In the 101st minute, he managed an important header inside the six-yard box. There is something about his forehead that acts as both a magnet and a mallet.

There was a sliding foul on Jimenez in defense to concede a penalty for Fulham's first goal, but the slower defender might not have been in a position to face the challenge in the first place.

"He has come back after not playing much football," Carrick said. "But they have done very well. He was such an enormous presence. They have been there, seen it, and done it. They have the strength to understand those big moments and not get distracted by them. He gives us a base on which to build.

"We will see what the future holds in terms of World Cups, but when he plays like that, he is definitely one of the best for me."

To the left of Maguire, Shaw offered his characteristic combination of class and composure. His last England start was the Euro 2024 final. Once again, this is an area where Tuchel has not yet settled.

Many auditioned, but none got the part. It will be hard to ignore Shaw if he maintains his fitness and form in a winning team that will return to the Champions League.

And then there is Mainoo, whose last international match also came in that final defeat to Spain. A month ago, he sought an exit from Old Trafford. Even at 20 years old, one wonders if his international spark faded at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. But now, the spark of renewal is bright. It certainly shone here.

A tackle on Jimenez in the first half was so fierce (and fair) that the recipient had to be given a boarding pass; he was launched so high.

The position is a bit deep, but on a day when English midfielder Jude Bellingham suffered a hamstring tendon injury with Real Madrid, Mainoo's performance was a reminder of his worth.

"You forget how young he is," Carrick said. "But we expect composure from him when he has the ball, when he can handle it. You see him playing with confidence."

Will Tuchel have confidence in the three players who have surprised him so far? At the very least, he should come and see. The club he once doubted is now one of his most valuable resources.
