Michael Carrick provides a crucial fitness update as the Reds chase a final point for third place, featuring an emotional Old Trafford farewell and mixed injury news.

Does Matthijs de Ligt deserve ONE more chance at Man Utd?

Manchester United are getting set for their final match at Old Trafford this season, with Michael Carrick’s side taking on Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.

The 12:30pm clash could be the last time several United players feature at Old Trafford, with Casemiro in line for an emotional farewell ahead of his expected exit when his deal expires this summer.

United had aimed to finish the campaign strongly with three consecutive victories, but were forced to settle for a dull goalless draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens was one of the few players to impress during an underwhelming performance from the Reds.

Results elsewhere also worked in United’s favour, as both Liverpool and Aston Villa were held to draws over the weekend. That leaves United needing just a single point from their remaining two fixtures to seal third place in the Premier League.

Ahead of the fixture, Carrick issued the latest on his squad on Friday afternoon.

Casemiro

What happened: Casemiro was not part of the United squad that faced Sunderland, having picked up a minor problem last week.

What's been said: "Case’s available," Carrick confirmed. "He’s had some ups and downs over the year, to finish so strongly and see that connection with the supporters is really good to see."

Possible return date: Sunday, 17 May – Nottingham Forest (H).

Benjamin Šeško

What happened: Benjamin Šeško was taken off at half-time against Liverpool two weeks ago, and missed the fixture against Sunderland after aggravating a shin problem.

What's been said: "Ben’s not as straightforward as Case," Carrick admitted. "He’s still not 100% with the problem he has. Apart from that, we’re alright."

Possible return date: Sunday, 17 May – Nottingham Forest (H).

Manuel Ugarte

What happened: Midfielder Manuel Ugarte was also not part of the squad that faced Sunderland, with Carrick confirming before the game that the Uruguayan had a back problem, but did not give a hint at the severity of his injury.

What's been said: The club confirmed on Thursday that Ugarte had returned to training.

Possible return date: Sunday, 17 May – Nottingham Forest (H).

Matthijs de Ligt

What happened: Matthijs de Ligt has not played for United since 30 November, out with a back injury, with no timeline for a return.

What's been said: “It's different treatment and different exercises. He's in the gym and doing work, but he's not quite on the grass, and he's not ready for that yet,” Carrick said earlier this month.

Possible return date: N/A
