Godwill Kukonki starred as Manchester United Under-18s beat Crystal Palace in the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup.

My take on Manchester United's 2-1 win against Crystal Palace

Godwill Kukonki is not a name that will be unfamiliar to Manchester United fans, even though he has yet to make his first professional appearance for the Red Devils. He does have plenty of first-team experience, though.

Kukonki was named in Rúben Amorim's first matchday squad in November 2024 for the trip to Ipswich Town at just 16 years old, while he was also included in Amorim's last travelling squad for the journey to Elland Road at the beginning of 2026.

"He’s 16 years old, but he’s impressed me a lot. He’s also a sign for our youth players that they can step up and be here if something happens with the first-team squad," Amorim said of Kukonki in December 2024. "They have to step up. I think he’s ready, he’s very adult, and he’s ready to cope with the demands of the Premier League.”

Even Michael Carrick is not unfamiliar with the Stoke-born defender; Kukonki was named amongst the substitutes for United's trip to Newcastle, but again, failed to get on the pitch to make his debut in red.

Kukonki shows ability in Palace win

The 18-year-old returned to Under-18s action for the FA Youth Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace, who Darren Fletcher's side would meet again on Wednesday evening at Selhurst Park in the final of the Premier League Cup. Kukonki started as the left-back, as he has done in every Youth Cup match this season, but can also play as a central defender.

As one of the oldest members of the group, Kukonki would be expected to impress and lead from the back in the FA Youth Cup semi-final, especially considering the Crystal Palace side they were playing hadn't reached this stage for nearly 30 years.

Kukonki started rather shaky, with an attempt to bring the ball out just after the 10-minute mark, given away with just three defenders to beat. Luckily for Kukonki, Palace failed to be clinical, a theme that continued for the rest of the 90 minutes.

The left-back didn't let that stop him, though; 20 minutes later, he drove into the penalty area and skipped past three Palace defenders, but just could not find the final ball into the box. Like before, he did not give up there, and 10 minutes later, he made a brilliant run through the left-half-space. Noah Ajayi played the ball into his stride, allowing Kukonki to whip in a first-time delivery, which proved to be a peach of a ball for Chido Obi, who directed it narrowly wide.

Like Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, Kukonki and Ajayi have a brilliant understanding on the left flank. One always hangs wide on the touchline, while the other stretches the defence deeper, or makes a run inside to offer more options to the wider player.

Kukonki was among United's better performers in the 120 minutes of Youth Cup action on Friday evening, and yet he is rarely seen in the Under-21s and was not included in Michael Carrick's first-team squad for the Chelsea match, despite the ongoing centre-back crisis.

United will face Liam Rosenior's side in a crucial match for Champions League qualification without Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, or Leny Yoro, leaving just Ayden Heaven as the only senior centre-back. Sonny Aljofree appears to be preparing for an Old Trafford exit, and Tyler Fredricson picked up an injury in the Premier League International Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Daniel Armer and Albert Mills continued their centre-back partnership, but Kukonki could have made way. Dante Plunkett and Jacob Watson have both played left-back for the under-18s this season, meaning Kukonki could have been absent and Fletcher's side could have coped.

Why Kukonki was forced to wait

Despite the under-18s' FA Youth Cup run, Kukonki would have wanted to play against Chelsea in the Premier League. Of course, he would have. But his involvement in the semi-final was crucial.

While he has featured in the first team, Kukonki's first-team status is rather unknown. Reports emerged in July 2025 that he was set to sign his first professional contract at Old Trafford, but this was never confirmed by the club or the player.

Kukonki's physicality is that of a Premier League player, but his defensive ability is not quite up to scratch just yet, especially if he were to play in central defence alongside another young defender like Heaven.

At just 18 years old, Kukonki has years to prove himself capable of playing for Manchester United. And that could start by helping the Under-18s win the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City in May.
