Man Utd vs Liverpool – How BIG is this game?

Manchester United face Liverpool in a tie to determine which team cements their Champions League qualification next season.

The derby comes at a time when both teams have been underwhelming over the past few games; Liverpool has cruised into fourth position despite winning only six of their last thirteen.

United have been promising in the long run, winning ten out of their last thirteen, but that includes two losses to Leeds and Newcastle, sides who sit in the lower half of the Premier League table.

Jamie Carragher has shared his views on the current situations at the two clubs, noting that both sides have been 'unconvincing' recently.

"I'm not confident," says Carragher

The former Liverpool defender spoke on The Peter Crouch Podcast, showing his contempt for the current state of his former side.

"I think Liverpool are getting results without playing well. I’m not convinced by them at all, to be honest, at the minute. I can’t see Liverpool winning it."

His views on United aren't too dissimilar, although the Reds have been the Premier League's most in-form side for 2026, Carragher is 'unconvinced' by Michael Carrick's side.

"I’m not confident. I’m not. I don’t think United are playing well, to be fair." Perhaps quite a harsh opinion considering the vast improvement from Rúben Amorim's tenure."

Carragher has predicted a 1-1 draw, as there is little to separate the two sides. Both teams could qualify for the Champions League after this derby, which would greatly improve the conditions of both clubs.

What should we expect from Sunday's game?

Mason Mount has recently returned to the squad, having been out of action due to a minor hamstring injury, but was being utilized against Chelsea and Brentford.

Kobbie Mainoo was extremely impressive against Brentford, as the Reds held out a 2-1 win on Monday to go three clear of fourth-place Liverpool. The 21-year-old has been pushing for a place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup.

Casemiro also impressed, as his passion inspired the Old Trafford faithful. He opened the scoring due to a fantastic header early on.

On the Liverpool side, Alexander Isak scored for the first time in five games, as he may pose a threat late on in his debut season for Liverpool

As Giorgi Mamarsdashvili and Alisson are still out injured, third-string keeper Freddie Woodman has stepped up recently, and despite his inexperience in the Premier League, he's aided Liverpool's change in form.
