A late booking for simulation overshadowed the Brazilian's missed chance to clinch victory, as a flat Manchester United struggled to break the deadlock against a dominant Sunderland side.
Manchester United's three-game winning streak came to an end as the Red Devils drew 0-0 against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Michael Carrick's side were devoid of any real quality in throughout the match with Sunderland being the better side in almost every facet of play.
The best chance of the game in normal time undoubtedly fell to Noah Sadiki, who in the first half was slipped through one-on-one with Senne Lammens, but the Belgian made himself big and kept the scorelines level.
United did not register a shot on target until Robin Roefs saved Matheus Cunha's effort from 11 yards out in the 93rd minute.
Robinson dissapointed in Cunha
It was a frustrating afternoon in Sunderland for every player. At best, the team huffed and puffed in brief spells but to no avail.
Cunha's opportunity to win the game was his and the side's best moment. However, it was shortly followed by a sour moment when he was booked for simulation.
Paul Robinson, a former England goalkeeper, slammed the Brazilian international during his commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live.
He said: "That was a really poor dive from Matheus Cunha. That was the best chance of the game.
"It was a good save from Robin Roefs after some really good play from Manchester United. When the ball comes out to Cunha 11 or 12 yards out, you expect him to score."
Midfield revamp clear to see
Against Liverpool, there were moments in the second-half that highlighted why it is best for all parties that Casemiro leaves. However, this game against Sunderland reflected how big of a miss the Brazilian will be.
Not only was the game flat, but across the board, the passing was poor as United failed to keep much of possession.
Mason Mount was played relatively out of position as one of the deeper midfielders alongside Kobbie Mainoo, and it was clear that there was that extra physicality and defensive awareness that was missing.
With Ugarte injured and Casemiro also out, the lack of options on the bench again showed that the club need to not only replace the five time Champions League winner, but also extra depth.
United have been heavily linked to the likes of Carlos Baleba, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Ederson from Atalanta. While it is unlikely all three are signed, the club do need to make two or three signings especially if Ugarte were to leave.
