Manchester United return to Premier League action on Monday night and face rivals Leeds and Harry Maguire is unavailable for selection due to suspension.
Manchester United return to action on Monday evening after a 24-day break, hosting fierce rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford in a pivotal Premier League clash.
With just seven matches remaining, every result is becoming increasingly significant. United are currently third in the table, holding only a one-point advantage over Aston Villa, and will be eager to strengthen their push for a Champions League spot.
Leeds, on the other hand, have seen their form dip after a promising run and are now drifting toward a relegation battle alongside Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Nottingham Forest. They sit just four points above the drop zone.
This marks Leeds’ first visit to Old Trafford since their return to the Premier League, with United aiming to improve on the 1-1 draw at Elland Road earlier this season.
Carrick hints that Martínez won't start vs Leeds
Lisandro Martínez has returned to training at United following on from his recent injury and Michael Carrick confirmed that the Argentine will return to the squad against Leeds.
But even though Harry Maguire is unavailable due to suspension, Carrick hinted that Martínez won't be rushed straight back into the line-up on Monday evening.
“It’s that call that we make," he explained when asked whether Martinez will start. "We wouldn’t be pushed into anything.
"It’s important that the boys are ready, as important as the next game always is, the most important is always the bigger picture. So, that’s a decision that we’ll take.
"He’s back training, which is great, and back on the grass, but we’ve certainly got to make the right decision and make sure he’s ready.”
Martínez has not had the best luck with injuries during his United career and those in charge will want to make sure they tread carefully when reintegrating him to the team.
Heaven deserves chance vs Leeds
If it is decided that this game is too soon for Martínez to start, Carrick will likely turn to 19-year-old Ayden Heaven, who has impressed whenever called upon this term.
Heaven was starting regularly before Carrick's arrival but has not played as much football as the ex-midfielder opted for experience to get results over the line.
Maguire has labelled heaven as 'quick, strong and really good on the ball' and he could partner Leny Yoro at the back against Leeds.
There would undoubtably be some concerns about the lack of experience in that centre-back partnership but both players are viewed as the future of the club and Heaven deserves a chance in the team if Martínez is not ready.
