Manchester United secured a crucial victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening as they beat Chelsea 1-0, with Matheus Cunha scoring the only goal of the game.

Has Michael Carrick earned a chance at the full-time job?

Manchester United secured a vital three points in the race for Champions League qualification with a narrow 1–0 victory over Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea, who had started the match seven points behind them in sixth place.

Heading into the game, Michael Carrick was well aware that a win was essential to strengthen his case for becoming the club’s permanent head coach for the 2026/27 season and beyond.

United’s task was made more difficult by the absence of four senior centre-backs. Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro were sidelined with potentially season-ending injuries, while Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez were suspended following red cards against AFC Bournemouth and Leeds United.

Chelsea controlled much of the first half and had a golden opportunity to take the lead around the 35-minute mark. Enzo Fernández beat both Mazraoui and Casemiro but failed to convert, sending his effort wide. That miss proved costly, as United went into the break ahead.

The breakthrough came when Bruno Fernandes surged down the right wing, getting past Cucurella and Garnacho before cutting the ball back to the edge of the box. Benjamin Šeško drew a defender away, allowing Matheus Cunha to strike first time into the top-right corner—making amends for an earlier moment when a heavy touch had earned him a booking.

United improved after the interval, but Chelsea remained dangerous, hitting the crossbar twice and continuing to dominate possession.

Former United winger Alejandro Garnacho was Chelsea’s biggest attacking threat, yet he was consistently kept quiet by Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui. The latter produced a standout moment with a superb recovery tackle in the 83rd minute to preserve United’s lead.

Man Utd player ratings vs Chelsea

Senne Lammens - 6/10

He made a few decent saves but was also helped by the post on a couple of occasions.

Diogo Dalot - 7/10

Really solid defensively against Garnacho and worked tirelessly.

Noussair Mazraoui - 7/10

Played in centre-back and worked well. A couple of poor tackles but mostly solid in an unfamiliar role.

Ayden Heaven - 8/10

Struggled slightly in the opening minutes but grew into the game. His passing was solid and also was strong defensively.

Luke Shaw - 7/10

A solid display on the left side of defence.

Casemiro - 7/10

Some important headers and blocks. Caught out in some moments but worked hard.

Kobbie Mainoo - 8.5/10

Arguably the best player on the night. Brilliant on the ball and even better off it. Won back possession so many times for the Reds and worked hard.

Bryan Mbeumo - 5/10

Things still aren't clicking for him in attack but he worked hard.

Bruno Fernandes - 8.5/10

A brilliant assist for Cunha and could have had one or two more. United's creative genius now has 18 assists for the season.

Matheus Cunha - 8/10

Produced the magic moment to grab all three points. It was a brilliant finish to score the only goal of the game. Solid otherwise too.

Benjamin Šeško - 6/10

Some mixed hold-up play throughout but battled well.
