Manchester United begin pre-season with a loss to Wrexham but valuable minutes in the legs to improve fitness.

Why Andrey Santos is a brilliant signing!More Videos

Manchester United kick-started their pre-season for the 26/27 season with a 1-0 loss against Championship side Wrexham.

While this is the first game of pre-season with the players looking to find fitness, a lot of the headlines will be about Andrey Santos's first game in a United shirt. In the first half, the senior side took to the field and was then replaced by the youth for the second half.

Michael Carrick's first-half side looked okay and tidy on the ball without threatening too much, with zero shots on target. However, the youthful second-half side looked a lot sharper and more exciting on the ball.

However, Wrexham's Sam Smith scored the only goal in the game to separate the two sides. Lewis O'Brien picked up the ball on the left of the box and played it across goal through Harry Maguire's legs for the striker to tap into the goal without challenge.

Player ratings are below.

First-half player ratings:

Tom Heaton - 6/10

Had very little to do all game with not many chances for both sides, let alone for him to face. There was not much he could have done for the goal.

Leny Yoro - 6/10

Playing at right-back in this game, he looked fairly comfortable and sniffed out danger well. Going forward, he combined well with Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo to help progress the ball.

Harry Maguire - 7/10

The cross for the goal went through his legs, but aside from that, he marshalled the defence well and was there to cover for Yoro if he pushed up. At times, he advanced beyond the midfield to progress the ball.

Ayden Heaven - 5/10

It might be harsh for a pre-season game as he was quite tidy all half and did come up with some last-ditch tackles. However, he switched off for a moment and lost sight of Smith before he scored.

Luke Shaw - 5/10

Largely had very little to do and was quite tidy on the ball. Perhaps could have helped out Heaven more with the goal. However, there were moments when Wrexham were able to counter.

Andrey Santos - 8/10

The new man was undoubtedly the club's best player in the first half. There was a scare early on when he was caught on the ball before Wrexham almost scored, but he recovered quickly to sniff out danger. Other than that, he progressed the ball well, fizzed the ball through to players and had some godo touches.

Mason Mount - 7/10

Looked tidy alongside Santos and seemed to have a good understanding with the Brazilian.

Jack Fletcher - 7/10

It was a surprise to see Jack Fletcher in the ten rather than Mount. However, he played well and was tidy when combining with the rest of the attack. He also had an interesting tactical role where he would drop deeper than Santos and Mount to collect the ball and play out from the back.

Bryan Mbeumo - 5/10

The Cameroonian had his moments, but the final ball or touch was missing. Very clear that, like with all the team, he needs more minutes to get up to speed.

Patrick Dorgu - 5/10

Very similar to Mbeumo, where he flashed with the odd moment but was clearly lacking sharpness.

Joshua Zirkzee - 5/10

It could be easy to be harsh on the Dutchman as the ball was not sticking and he seemed off the pace compared to his teamates. But this is the first game of pre-season, so you would expect this to improve with more minutes.

Second-half XI player ratings:

Radek Vitek - 7/10

Made a brilliant one legged save to keep the score at 1-0.

Jayden Kamason - 7/10

The young right-back looked sharp on the ball. Combined well with Shea Lacey on the right, especially with overlapping runs when Lacey cut inside.

Dan Armer - 7/10

Looked good on the ball and helped marshall the back line but had very little to do.

Jacob Devaney - 7/10

Looked really comfortable on the ball, often progressing the ball forward well ahead of the midfield.

Harry Amass - 8/10

Brilliant performance from the left-back with big challenges to stop attacks. Going forward, he was positive and direct when combining with Ethan Williams on the wing. It was his cross that was whipped into Ethan Wheatley for the club's first major chance of the game.

Dan Gore - 7/10

Formed a part of a brilliant midfield display. Very comfortable in keeping and recycling possession while also being direct on the ball.

Toby Colleyer - 7/10

Rotated well with Tyler Fletcher from being in the ten and then dropping into midfield pivot with Dan Gore. Showed good intelligence to funnel the ball to the wings, where United looked the most dangerous.

Tyler Fletcher - 7/10

Took the captain's armband and put in a good shift. Similar to his midfield partners but also sniffed out danger when Wrexham tried to counter.

Shea Lacey - 9/10 - MOTM

From players in both halves for United, he was undoubtedly the best player. He was constantly being direct and causing chaos for the opposing defenders. In a game where there was not much major threat for either side, Lacey was constantly searching for a way to make things happen.

Ethan Williams - 7/10

He was very direct and kept attracting the full-back to follow him to open up space for Amass to be creative.

Ethan Wheatley 6/10

Held the ball up well but had very little goal-scoring opportunity apart from when Amass whipped the ball into him.
