Manchester United confirmed Champions League qualification with an important win over arch rivals, Liverpool, at Old Trafford.
Manchester United secured an important three points against Liverpool, which earned them Champions League football for the following campaign, potentially handing Michael Carrick the permanent job.
Matheus Cunha gave United an early lead inside seven minutes after returning to the squad. The Brazilian missed the visit of Brentford, but returned emphatically with a half-volley from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 early on.
Benjamin Šeško made it 2-0 soon after. Bruno Fernandes headed it to Šeško - although he was not awarded with his 20th assist of the season - and the Slovenian appeared to handle the ball. VAR chose common sense over strict regulations and awarded the goal, thanks to "no conclusive evidence" to overturn it.
Liverpool started the second half with a point to prove, netting two goals inside 10 minutes of the second 45. Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo levelled the game, with two poor moments for United's defence.
Mainoo's late effort handed United a 3-2 lead, with just over 10 minutes to play. The Red Devils defended deep to hold on against a dangerous Liverpool side, with Arne Slot throwing caution to the wind late on.
Man Utd player ratings vs Liverpool
Senne Lammens - 5/10
At fault for Liverpool's second goal, trying to play out from the back. Should have done better for the first, too. Still, his save in the 68th minute denied a certain goal.
Diogo Dalot - 6/10
Very nothing performance from the Portugal international. Struggled when Rio Ngumoha came on.
Harry Maguire - 5/10
Poor performance from the England international. Well below this season's standards.
Ayden Heaven - 7/10
Good showing from the youngster. Helped progress play and did OK defensively.
Luke Shaw - 5/10
Booked for a silly mistake. Had little impact on the attack, despite positioning high and wide for much of the first half
Casemiro - 5/10
Failed to win the midfield battle, and could not keep up with play in the second half. His worst game under Michael Carrick.
Kobbie Mainoo - 8/10 - MOTM
Should have done better for Liverpool's two goals, but conducted the game from deep in the first half. A brilliant finish to give United a 3-2 lead in the 77th minute.
Bryan Mbeumo - 6/10
Started well but faded throughout. Deserved to be subbed when he was.
Bruno Fernandes - 6.5/10
Deserved an assist for his role in Šeško's goal, but little to say other than that. Led by example.
Matheus Cunha - 7/10
Did well for his goal in the first 10 minutes, but struggled to impact the game afterwards. Put in the hard yards when he went up front.
Benjamin Šeško - 7/10
An impressive 45 minutes from the Slovenian. He did well to battle with Konate and Van Dijk. United will hope his injury is not too serious.
Subs: Amad (4/10), Dorgu (6.5/10), Zirkzee (6/10), Leny Yoro (6/10)
