Manchester United provided an underwhelming display on their return to the Stadium of Light and failed to score a goal for the first time under Michael Carrick.
It was a poor start to the game from Manchester United and it was the hosts who had the majority of chances, and that trend continued throughout.
Michael Carrick's side did have some chances on the break but were uncharacteristically poor in making the final pass or shot.
Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount were among those trusted to start the game following qualification to the Champions League but they failed to perform.
The United player ratings can be read below.
Senne Lammens - 8/10
Made two important saves in either half, kept United in the game.
Noussair Mazraoui - 5/10
Did not offer much throughout.
Harry Maguire - 7/10
A solid display. Stopped some dangerous attacks.
Lisandro Martínez - 4/10
Not great on the ball on his return to the side.
Luke Shaw - 6/10
An OK display.
Kobbie Mainoo - 7/10
United's best periods of this game came when Mainoo was controlling things. He read the game well despite not having Casemiro next to him.
Mason Mount - 4/10
He started the game deeper and failed to offer much. He then swapped with Bruno to play further forward and was still anonymous.
Amad - 4/10
The winger continues to struggle in games. He should have had an easy assist but missed the pass to Cunha. Also ruined a dangerous counter-attack by slipping on the ball.
Bruno Fernandes - 6/10
He struggled on an afternoon where his forward players offered very little. There weren't really any runners for him to find with passes.
Matheus Cunha - 5/10
Quiet afternoon on the left. Moved centrally in the second half but didn't have a large impact. Should have scored late on.
Joshua Zirkzee - 4/10
He was rewarded a chance in the side and disappointed heavily. He could not hold the ball up and was weak against Sunderland's energetic defence.
