Atlético Madrid in talks for Salinas
Jorge Salinas has been linked throughout the summer as an option for United to consider, with Laurie Whitwell confirming the Spaniard has a £13.7 million release clause, which adds to the appeal.
The 19-year-old was an ever-present for Racing Santander as they won promotion to La Liga as champions of the Segunda División.
However, Whitwell reported that Atletico Madrid have entered the race for the talented youngster after selling Matteo Ruggeri to Aston Villa and are now in need of left-back cover.
The fairly cheap release clause makes this a deal that could be wrapped up quickly should United believe he is the heir to Shaw.
United want a loan for Balde
In the same report, Whitwell revealed United's stance on Barcelona's Alejandro Balde, who has been widely reported as a key target, with Lewis Hall seemingly unavailable.
The Catalan club prefer to sell the player permanently, whereas United would prefer to discuss a loan move, similar to the deal that took Marcus Rashford to Barcelona last summer.
Given this stance that both clubs have, it could mean that any deal would require both clubs to come to a compromise quickly, with the deadline approaching quickly.
A deal for Salinas at this moment, due to how straightforward the deal would be and the potential package for the player, may be preferred by the recruitment team.
A new left-back is unlikely to be signed before Manchester United's next match against Ipswich Town in the Premier League. Michael Carrick's side return to Old Trafford with the hope of securing all three points after the disappointment of the opening weekend.
