Manchester United travel to Atletico Madrid for their second Champions League tie of the season, a crucial game for Michael Carrick's future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are looking to bounce back from another disappointing Premier League result in their return to Champions League football against Atletico Madrid.

Michael Carrick's side were dominated at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, despite playing against 10 men for the final part of the game. Bryan Mbeumo thought his goal had given United a lucky escape, but poor defending from Lisandro Martínez allowed Dominic Solanke to level the scoreline before the end of the 90 minutes.

United's last Champions League tie saw an impressive 4-0 win, with goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Martínez, and Benjamin Šeško. But form has been anything but good since then.

A rare positive against Tottenham Hotspur was Carlos Baleba's debut just after the hour mark. He immediately won fans over with crisp passing, tidy dribbling, and ground coverage, qualities not seen at Old Trafford this season.

Senne Lammens will continue between the sticks, given Karl Darlow was not spotted in training ahead of the squad's trip to Madrid. The young Belgian has been struggling this season, but was seriously impressive in his debut campaign, and will be a crucial player if he can get back to his best.

The back four could be difficult for Michael Carrick. Luke Shaw has not travelled to the Spanish capital, while Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui remain out injured. Harry Amass is one option at left-back, but Carrick will likely choose the experience of Diogo Dalot on the left-hand side of defence, leaving Leny Yoro to keep his place at right-back.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez struggled against Tottenham Hotspur, but with Matthijs de Ligt still working his way back from injury, Carrick will likely continue with Maguire and Martínez in central defence.

Midfield is another difficult area for the head coach. Kobbie Mainoo looks set to miss the Champions League tie, while Youri Tielemans has failed to impress since his move from Aston Villa.

If Carlos Baleba is fit enough, he should be given a starting spot, though he is unlikely to last the full 90 minutes. Tielemans could partner him, offering a new dynamic in central midfield.

Bruno Fernandes will keep his place in attacking midfield, though Michael Carrick has revealed nobody has a set place in the starting side.

"This is not on Bruno, this line, but nobody is guaranteed a place in the team. Don't take that as me talking on Bruno, just in general. There's a level of performance, behaviour, understanding we need as a squad to perform," he told reporters in his pre-match press conference

"All the boys know that, they understand that, they've got their own standards and want to be at their best. That's pretty clear."

Marcus Rashford should return to the starting side, given his experience in La Liga last term with Barcelona. This could see Matheus Cunha switch to the right-hand side, given Amad is only just returning from injury.

Bryan Mbeumo will keep his place through the middle, with Šeško still battling fitness issues.

Manchester United predicted XI vs Atletico Madrid: Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martínez, Shaw; Tielemans, Baleba; Cunha, Fernandes (C), Rashford; Mbeumo.
