Wayne Rooney backtracks on his harsh criticism of the Slovenian striker’s toughness after medical updates reveal the true severity of the recurring shin injury sidelining Old Trafford's number thirty.
Benjamin Sesko's time at Manchester United so far has been fairly mixed, with positives and negatives as he attempts to navigate life as the centre-forward at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
The former RB Leipzig forward has proven his ability in front of goal on many occasions, but still needs work to do in different areas of his game.
That is partly why Michael Carrick has opted to use him sparingly, often as a super-sub rather than the starting striker - but it is not the only reason Sesko hasn't been starting games regularly.
The 23-year-old has had some untimely injuries since he arrived at the club last summer, including a shin issue at the back-end of last season which saw him miss all of the pre-season tour action.
It appears that the same injury has recurred for the striker, who missed United's most recent clash against Fulham before the international break.
Rooney doubted Šeško's injuries
Šeško's latest injury absence has caused some strange reactions from former United players, with Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes criticising the player on their podcast.
Wayne Rooney was also among those to send a dig towards Šeško after it was revealed that he missed the Fulham game with a shin injury.
"I remember before games we’d have, you used to get injections, and you used to have a doctor putting them in your arse," proclaimed Rooney when speaking about United's no.30.
“There would be a line of like five or six players stood there with their shorts down and the doctor is just injecting them, but to play.”
Rooney apologises to Šeško
After it was revealed that Sesko's injury was more serious than people assumed, and that he was not involved for Slovenia over the international break, Rooney issued an apology to the young striker.
Speaking on the latest episode of Stick to United, Rooney stated: “It’s long-term Sesko?
“Well, if it’s long-term, then I suppose I should apologise because... So, I apologise, Sesko. I apologise if I misjudged you. Sorry.”
It is certainly interesting to see one of United's legends backtrack on their criticism of a current player, but it's not too surprising that it was Rooney.
The club's all-time top scorer is one of the best pundits in the game at the moment and has regularly shown more support to the team than some other ex-players.
Scholes and Butt are less likely to issue apologies to Sesko, although that is not surprising to any supporter of the club.
In terms of a return to action for Šeško, it was suggested by Carrick that the issue was not too serious. A three-week international break works in the player's favour too.
The United boss said: "He just felt a little bit of pain after the game the other night [vs Brighton]. We're assessing that. Hopefully, it's not too bad, but we will have to see."
