Stalled contract talks and a fallout with Michael Carrick have paved the way for Al-Hilal to test Manchester United’s resolve with a massive mid-season offer.

Bruno Fernandes has been quality since joining Manchester United, but is his time at the club running out?More Videos

Bruno Fernandes enjoyed a record-breaking season in the 2025/25 Premier League campaign for Manchester United, recording 21 assists to break the league assist record, and was also rightfully named the Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Players' Player of the Year.

However, this season couldn't have started worse for the club's captain: his only goal contributions so far came from a goal against Sabah in the Champions League and a hat-trick and an assist against Ipswich in August, the club's only win of the season.

Despite going into the October international break nursing an injury, and still nursing it after, Fernandes has still been a shadow of himself from last season, and tensions between the player and Michael Carrick boiled over after a 4-1 loss to Como, where he openly called out the head coach for his poor tactical setup.

The Portuguese star was promptly benched for the next game against Bournemouth, and despite the team needing more attacking presence, the 32-year-old remained an unused substitute.

Al-Hilal preparing a January bid

Bruno Fernandes' contract expires at the end of this season, and reports indicate that extension talks have stalled, with the midfielder reportedly growing disillusioned with the club's project.

As reported by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Al-Hilal have revived their long-standing interest in Fernandes and are prepared to make an offer of £45 million as early as January to finally secure the midfielder's signature.

With Fernandes' struggles so far this season and tensions with the club growing, it's becoming more likely that a move for the club's captain could materialise as soon as January.

Although United can extend his current deal by another year, Al-Hilal's reported £45 million bid could be an opportunity for the club to cash in on their captain as doubts about Fernandes' future grow.

Saudi Arabia could be Fernandes' only option

When people look back on Bruno Fernandes' footballing career, his trophy cabinet will paint a very different picture of how brilliant he was as a footballer, particularly at Manchester United, after winning only one FA Cup and one EFL Cup medal during his time at Old Trafford so far.

While the 32-year-old would ideally want his next club to be on the continent, Saudi Arabia may be his only viable option, as his age, wage demands, and recent form could put off several big clubs.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes that Premier League clubs would be unwilling to pay £60 million for the midfielder, raising questions about his market value.

"Would Bruno Fernandes go for £60m? You might from Saudi Arabia, but you wouldn't from another Premier League team - there is no way that would happen.

"I really don't think a Premier League club would pay it. He's 32, so would you pay £60m and put him on a huge wage?

"I would think absolutely not.

"Has he been a great player for Man United? Yes, he has. He's had periods where he has dragged the club out of trouble with his goals and his assists."
