David Ornstein has explained why Manchester United decided to give Michael Carrick more time to turn things around at Old Trafford.
Manchester United ended their nine-game winless run on Tuesday night after completing a thrilling comeback to win 3-2 against AS Roma.
United produced a poor first-half performance and went into the interval 2-0 down after goals from Matias Soule and Donyell Malen.
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back for United through a penalty, after which Matheus Cunha went on to score a brace to complete the comeback and earn United three crucial points in the Champions League.
Following the defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, the United hierarchy decided to give Carrick more time, and the 45-year-old will be hoping that the win against Roma will be the turning point in what has, to this point, been a dreadful season.
Why United decided to give Carrick more time
Speaking on The Athletic podcast, David Ornstein explained why Manchester United decided to back Carrick, despite the poor results so far this season.
“I do think, whether you like it or not, that they wanted to keep Carrick on,” Ornstein said.
"I hear that they took the temperature of the dressing room and the environment at Carrington, and they felt that the players being booed off after Carrick was cheered off post Bournemouth was a moment of realisation for this group that they needed to put things right.
"The market was also a big factor. If there had been a dream target available for United, I think they would have made a change.
"But, in the circumstances, they really did want Carrick to have a little bit more time to turn it around."
There has been improvement since loss to Bournemouth
Manchester United have looked a lot better since the loss to Bournemouth, albeit their performances are still far from perfect. The first half against Chelsea was very good. United were the better of the two teams and created several promising chances, but they failed to convert. The second half was poor, but Lisandro Martinez's sending-off did not help matters.
While Roma were the better of the two teams in the first half, United fought hard in the second half, and unlike a lot of games this season where United's performances have been quite flat, they kept pushing and put the Serie A side under serious pressure in certain moments.
The manner of victory against Roma should also provide United with a lot of confidence and a real feel-good factor going into Sunday's game against Aston Villa.
After the Villa game, there is an international break, which would be the ideal moment to make a change in the dugout, should United so choose. However, if United can build on Tuesday's win and beat Villa, Carrick will likely keep his job. The performance against Villa will also be important. Carrick needs to show that not only can he find ways to win games, but he also needs to show he can do it in a way that United can be consistent.
