A 16-year-old goal-scoring phenomenon has sparked a continental bidding war after requesting to leave Old Trafford, with Real Madrid leading the chase to exploit a crucial regulatory loophole.
With JJ Gabriel looking likely to leave, which other Man Utd Academy stars could feature?More Videos
The revelation that JJ Gabriel requested the cancellation of his youth registration raised serious concerns among the Manchester United faithful, with the teenager widely regarded as one of the brightest talents to come through the club's Carrington academy in recent years.
At just 15, Gabriel has already made a significant impression at the youth level, scoring 23 goals in 23 appearances in the U18 Premier League. His rapid development has generated considerable excitement, with expectations growing that he could be handed his senior debut before the end of the current season.
The youngster had reportedly been in line for a place in Manchester United's matchday squad for their Carabao Cup clash against Brighton. Having been named the U18 Premier League Player of the Season for 2025-26, his potential involvement would have presented him with the opportunity to make history as the youngest player ever to represent the club.
However, Gabriel's request to have his youth registration cancelled has changed the situation dramatically. Rather than making his anticipated first-team breakthrough, the forward was left out of the squad, leaving significant uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford and raising questions about whether his promising journey with United will continue.
Real Madrid submit JJ Gabriel offer
Manchester United denied JJ Gabriel's request to cancel his registration, and remains a Manchester United player as Premier League rules require the club, player and their parent or carer to agree to the cancellation for it to be valid.
However, now that he is 16, owing to the fact he holds a European passport, he could sign for a club on the continent thanks to a loophole which could see United be powerless to do anything to keep him at the club.
According to AS, Real Madrid has submitted an offer to Gabriel and has informed Manchester United of their interest, with his future expected to become clearer soon.
The outlet states that Real Madrid began exploring a potential deal several weeks ago and believes it has completed the necessary groundwork and set a financial limit for the proposed deal, but reports indicate it has not yet received an official response confirming its decision.
Real Madrid not alone in their pursuit
JJ Gabriel finds himself at the centre of a major transfer battle between European giants, as Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also shown interest in signing the wonderkid.
Reports state that Bayern Munich have been active in their pursuit, but there is no clear indication that Gabriel is preparing to move to Germany, and with suggestions increasing that the 16-year-old prefers a move to the Spanish capital over Barcelona, Los Blancos look like the club in the lead of the race to Gabriel's signature.
One stumbling block in potential negotiations is the 16-year-old's salary demand, with the English forward said to be seeking a salary of around £845,000 from whichever club signs him.
For now, it's a waiting game for Real Madrid until JJ Gabriel makes his final decision. The Spanish giants have made their offer, informed Manchester United, and believe they are leading the pursuit of the highly sought-after forward.
