Matthijs de Ligt is with the sqyad as Michael Carrick’s squad prepares for a crucial European test, while key stars remain absent ahead of the Madrid trip.
Manchester United are returning to European action on Tuesday evening as Michael Carrick's Reds travel to face Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.
The Reds have won just one of their six Premier League fixtures this season, a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town in August, and sit in a dismal 13th-place position in the table. Their most recent result, a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, has only deepened worries.
However, after one gameweek of the Champions League, the club is 4th in the European table following a 4-0 win over Sabah FK, and Carrick will hope for a similar performance in Spain to get his side back on track.
However, Atleti are on a great run of form themselves, sitting second in La Liga with 19 points after eight games, and have won their last four fixtures in a row, including a big 2-1 win over local rivals Real Madrid before the international break.
Every United player spotted in training
On Monday morning, United held their customary open training session at Carrington for press and TV cameras, with this providing an insight into who may be available to play against Atleti.
Against Spurs, United had several key players unavailable, with Benjamin Šeško, Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu, Matthijs de Ligt, and Manuel Ugarte all watching from the sidelines, although a good debut from Carlos Baleba was a positive.
At the Carrington training complex, training started with the goalkeepers, as Dermot Mee, Senne Lammens, and Karl Darlow were joined by some Academy talents.
Maon Mount, Marcus Rashford, Andrey Santos, and others soon followed as they were handed bibs. Another good sight was seeing Matthijs de Ligt training with the rest of the group as they warmed up, with his return to action expected soon.
Unfortunately, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw were not spotted in training, with reports suggesting a decision on whether the duo will travel to Madrid is set to be made this afternoon.
Full United training squad vs Atletico Madrid:
Lammens, Heaton, Mee;
Maguire, De Ligt, Amass, Armer, Dalot, Martinez, Yoro, Heaven;
Mount, J. Fletcher, Tielemans, Baleba, Santos, Fernandes;
Lacey, Zirkzee, Mbeumo, Rashford, Cunha, Amad.
It's a worrying week for United
With only two wins in their first nine fixtures across all competitions this season, Carrick face a make-or-break week ahead.
It's understandable that, given the club's current form, United aren't favourites against Atletico Madrid on foreign soil. A draw would probably be a good result for United.
However, with a trip to face Leeds Unitedn at Elland Road looming on Sunday afternoon, another week without a win could be disastrous for the former United midfielder, amid grumbles over poor performances and results.
Leeds are flying high, sitting 7th in the Premier League with three wins so far. While they can be beaten, the performances of Daniel Farke's men have been admirable.
They looked the better side against current champions Arsenal despite playing away from home and were unlucky to lose the tie. They will be smelling blood when United cross the boarder from Lancashire to Yorkshire.
