Tensions mount at Old Trafford as stars clash with the board over failed recruitment, defending their manager against hierarchy claims that the dressing room has fractured.
Manchester United have endured a disastrous start to the season, with their campaign beginning to unravel following a 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign.
Michael Carrick's side have now suffered four defeats in their opening nine matches across all competitions, with their latest setback coming in a 2-0 loss away to Atletico Madrid.
The defeat sparked a remarkable post-match outburst from Lisandro Martínez, who publicly criticised United's board and recruitment strategy, insisting that the squad "expect more from the top" if they are to challenge for silverware.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, the 28-year-old Argentina international directly questioned the work of technical director Jason Wilcox and the club's hierarchy, pointing to a lack of investment during the summer transfer window as a key factor behind United's ongoing struggles.
Sources: United players firmly backing Carrick
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Roundtable reported that most of United's current squad share Martínez's view that United's board members failed Carrick in the summer transfer window by not investing enough in the squad after last season.
Now, Roundtable can further reveal that United's players are firmly behind Carrick and his long-term future at United, although those above him feel the head coach is starting to lose the dressing room's faith.
It is understood that those within the squad are sick and tired of the managerial cycle, with Erik ten Hag and Rúben Amorim having already been hired or handed new contracts under the current regime and subsequently sacked.
This comes despite sources telling Roundtable that United's higher-ups believe Carrick is losing the dressing room's support after a winless run in the club's last five fixtures.
United's board members are said to be unhappy with the recent run of performances and results. However, for now, Carrick's job remains safe.
Will Martínez face punishment?
In short, it's very likely. According to The Athletic, United could very well take action against the central defender in the coming days.
Sources reportedly say the player will inevitably be fined for his actions, and Martínez could face a spell on the sidelines, depending on what punishment Carrick himself deems sufficient as the club prepares to face Leeds United away from home on Sunday afternoon.
It is not the first time players have taken some form of action against the club, with Wayne Rooney famously handing in a transfer request amid feelings of a lack of investment in the squad.
With Martínez's contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, it seems unlikely he will be offered an extension, and he will almost certainly leave at the end of June.
