Insiders reveal a defensive priority at Old Trafford as the club targets an experienced left-back to bolster the squad alongside potential late-window movement in the forward line.
Manchester United are still looking to do business in the final few days of the transfer window as Michael Carrick's men gear up for the 2026/27 campaign.
While the boss will be preparing his side to face Ipswich Town, those in the corridors of power at Carrington are working on the finishing touches ahead of transfer deadline day.
United have signed four senior stars this summer: goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielders Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba, committing up to £155 million in transfer fees.
However, with multiple players still looking to depart before the end of the window and United also looking at strengthening in the defensive area, further activity at Old Trafford is expected before the window shuts.
United bringing a left-back in is a guarantee
With the above in mind, according to Fabrizio Romano, United are still working on a deal for a new left-back before the transfer window closes.
Romano claims United are exploring options for an experienced left-back who can provide competition and offer an international profile, who is a "guarantee" in the market rather than a risky signing.
Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has previously been considered, with United holding talks with his representative, Jorge Mendes, but a deal is currently viewed as too expensive due to the transfer fee and salary involved.
Romano compared it to United’s 2020 loan move for Sergio Reguilón, suggesting the club may be seeking a similar short-term solution rather than pursuing a major superstar signing.
United also considering a striker
There could also be movement in the striker department if Joshua Zirkzee leaves the club.
Zirkzee signed for United in a £36 million deal in 2024, but has failed to nail down a place in the squad amid competition from Rasmus Højlund, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško in the attacking department.
Fiorentina have reportedly submitted an official proposal for a loan with a £4.3 million fee and a buy clause, while other clubs are also interested.
Romano also detailed that Serie A Juventus could potentially enter the race for Zirkzee if they sell Jonathan David.
Should Zirkzee depart, United would need to bring in another striker, meaning the final days of the window could see activity in both positions.
The Athletic reported earlier this week that if Zirkzee does leave, an incoming striker would likely be on loan rather than a long-term first-team signing, a little like the situation at left-back.
