Manchester United put on a decent performance against Leeds United to earn a well-earned away point in a hostile atmosphere, as United rose to the occasion and showed a mentality and cohesion that have been lacking at times this season.

United weathered an early storm from the hosts, with a host of crunching challenges being exchanged, but Michael Carrick's side held firm and grew into the half, with their pressure being rewarded in the 35th minute when Bryan Mbeumo bundled home a Youri Tielemans cross.

However, the home side bounced back quickly after the second half kicked off, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelling the score in the 51st minute. While both sides will feel they could have taken all three points, a draw was probably the right outcome given the balance of play.

While good in isolation, the point will do little to change United's terrible start to the season, with the side languishing in 13th on seven points, already six points adrift from the top four, as the club's worst start to a league season for forty years goes on.

Bruno Fernandes linked with Galatasaray move

There is no doubt that Bruno Fernandes is by far the club's best transfer in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with the Portuguese star contributing an outstanding 111 goals and 109 assists in his 337 appearances since making the switch from Sporting CP to Manchester in 2020.

The 2025/26 PFA Players' Player of the Year winner is clearly United's best player, so it comes as no surprise that the 32-year-old's slow start to the season has coincided with the club's poor start to their campaign.

Turkish outlet Fanatik has reported that United's loss to Atletico Madrid last week was the final straw for the Portuguese maestro, with the outlet reporting that Fernandes agreed with Lisandro Martínez's post-match assessment of the squad, and that he has become disillusioned with the project at the squad, with the claim being made that he's tired of praising the club's history and that management needs to present a clear vision to him.

They claim that Fernandes has burnt his bridges at Manchester United, rejecting a new contract offer in recent weeks, and reportedly wants a move as soon as January.

The midfielder's contract runs until the end of this season, with reports that Manchester United are trying to activate the one-year extension option; if Fernandes doesn't agree, he will be free to negotiate with any club from January.

Having pushed for a move last summer, Galatasaray are said to be in constant contact with Fernandes and his agent, but Barcelona are rumoured to also want to secure Fernandes' signature, though the outlet claims it would be unlikely for the Spanish giants to allocate the large budget that will be required.

Does Fernandes need to be rested?

Bruno Fernandes has endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, with his three goals and one Premier League assist all coming in Manchester United's 5-2 win over Ipswich at the end of August.

The 32-year-old has been managing an injury he picked up in the weeks leading up to the international break, missing Portugal's second international fixture against Norway.

Fernandes still doesn't look fully up to pace, and he hasn't had much of an impact in many of United's games. As the Old Trafford faithful have grown to rely on him over the years, his drop-off in form has become all the more significant.

The midfielder possesses the ability to create a chance out of nothing and flip a game on its head, meaning the club's captain is rarely substituted, though the question is starting to arise as to whether Fernandes needs some time to be rested, and with the recent success of Youri Tielemans in Fernandes' favoured role, ahead of Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba in the pivot, Carrick has a major selection headache, with Fernandes twice being shifted to a wide role to get the most out of Tielemans, and Kobbie Mainoo returning from injury.
