Following a standout loan spell and a rising price tag, the teenage defender’s future at Old Trafford hangs in the balance amid intensifying interest and squad depth concerns.

Last summer, Manchester United were very active in the loan market, sending several academy talents across the English football pyramid to accelerate their development through regular first-team football. The club viewed temporary moves as an important way for its younger players to gain valuable experience away from the pressure of academy football, while also testing themselves against senior opposition.

One of the most impressive loanees was Harry Amass, who joined Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day. The young full-back quickly established himself as an important player at Hillsborough, making 21 appearances during his time with the club and earning the Player of the Month award in November. His consistent performances marked the spell as a particularly productive one for both Amass and United.

Wednesday's financial turmoil last year also meant that United covered all of the costs associated with the loan. The deal ultimately expired during the winter transfer window due to a break clause, bringing Amass' time in Sheffield to an earlier conclusion than might otherwise have been expected. Despite that, his performances had clearly impressed those back at Old Trafford.

After impressing Manchester United's academy staff during his loan spell in Sheffield, Amass' next move was to another Championship side higher up the league table, with Norwich City securing his services. The switch represented another opportunity for the defender to continue his development at a competitive level, while taking the next step towards establishing himself as a first-team player.

What's next for Harry Amass?

Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, he only managed to make a 15-minute cameo for Norwich last season before picking up a hamstring injury in training, which brought a premature end to his impressive loan season.

After recovering from his injury setback, the young left-back has picked up a decent number of minutes in pre-season for Michael Carrick, as he continues to assess his options at left-back.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Amass could leave Old Trafford this summer for a fee in the region of £7 million with add-ons.

While the deal details aren't known, Radek Vitek's move to Middlesbrough included a buy-back clause and a 35% sell-on clause, so it's understandable to expect similar terms for Amass.

Can Man Utd afford to let Amass leave?

Manchester United have seemingly been open to selling Amass all summer despite impressing for Carrick in pre-season and it being evident that United have a clear weakness at left-back when it comes to depth.

United reportedly remain in the market for a left-back, but a move for their dream target, Lewis Hall, looks unlikely despite some reports indicating that both parties seemingly want the move.

While Noussair Mazraoui impressed as a defensive left-back for Morocco at the World Cup, it is still clear that Carrick needs a natural left-back to compete with Luke Shaw and ultimately replace him in the long term.

Letting Amass go for a measly sum of £7 million would quite frankly be a terrible bit of business from United, as they provide further proof that the club are very poor when it comes to selling players.

While a buy-back and sell-on clause would make a potential deal slightly more palatable, the 19-year-old has proven that he is one of the most exciting young left-backs in England, and if they are dead set on letting Amass leave, it should be another loan deal to let him develop even more.
