The Manchester United defender opens up about Thomas Tuchel's surprising FaceTime rejection, his shock at missing the tournament, and why he refuses to retire from international football.

Could United go for another defender in the summer?More Videos

Harry Maguires revival at Manchester United has been nothing short of heroic.

After a nightmarish period of 2021 - 2023 on and off the pitch for Harry Maguire, from almost being forced out of the club, booing from fans and losing the captaincy, he has now become a mainstay in the side.

Under Ruben Amorim, the Englishman was one of very few players who seemed to have thrived under the back three system. However, it was under Michael Carrick where the defender recieved his plaudits as he struck up a brilliant partnership with Lisandro Martinez and then Ayden Heaven.

Even during his darkest spells, Maguire was always a regular for England at every international tournement under Gareth Southgate. Despite multiple omissions from squads and then a return to England in March under Thomas Tuchel, Maguire was not selected to go to the world cup.

England omission 'tough to take'

After a scintellating season, Maguire not being on the plane to the World Cup was a surprise to everyone, especially to himself.

He confirmed as much on Twitter when he said: " I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision."

Maguire has since joined Gary Lineker on his podcast The Rest Is Football as contributor during the World Cup and he confirmed how he found out that he was no longer in the squad.

He said "So he FaceTimes everyone… Yeah, it's quite an awkward call…  It's quite a unique way to do it. It makes it harder probably for himself to see our reactions and things like that.

"He said that he's gone with the four lads that he got through the qualifying in the autumn camps, where he felt like they did well during those six games.  But he did say that he can't really give me an excuse. But listen, that's football. It was tough to take."

Still dreaming of the Euros

Maguire would be 37 by time the next World Cup comes around and many, including himself, believed that this year would be his last chance at going.

'I'm 33 now, so 37 at the next World Cup. It looks far away," he said on the Rest Is Football.

On top of this many expected that he could be retiring from international football as in his statement he seemed to have hinted at it.

He tweeted: "I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years."

However, he has confirmed that he is not giving up on his international career and potentially hinting at hopes of heading to the Euros.

He said (quotes via BBC Sport):  "I don't think I would retire from England. I still feel I have something to offer.

"There will be a time and a place where I don't deserve to get picked but I probably still wouldn't come out and retire. If I got one more cap it would be worth it."
