Bryan Mbeumo’s goal almost gave Manchester United a first win in four, yet late drama and ongoing passive play left Michael Carrick searching for answers amid a worrying winless streak.

Manchester United lost more points in the Premier League after Dominic Solanke's late equaliser made it 1-1, snatching a point for Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils are now four games without a win in all competitions.

The away side dominated the first half, with Michael Carrick's side almost a step behind in every regard. The performance can be summarised by a mistake from Senne Lammens inside three minutes, with a pass to Kobbie Mainoo that was not on target. The ball was snatched by Spurs, but the Belgian pulled off a wonder save to keep it 0-0.

After the substitution of Carlos Baleba, United regained some control in the second half. They were rewarded with a goal from Bryan Mbeumo to make it 1-0, with a well-taken goal inside the box.

Despite Spurs going down to 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur headbutted Luke Shaw, Solanke latched onto a cross and flicked the ball into the net in the 90th minute to secure a point for his side.

Carrick applauds Mbeumo

In pre-season, Bryan Mbeumo had been one of Manchester United's standout players and looked in form in front of goal going into the season. However, due to Amad's injury, the Cameroonian featured mainly on the right wing but struggled for any sort of form, despite scoring against Ipswich.

However, with Amad back, Mbeumo returned to play up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko. While the first half was not his fluid best, in the second half he looked a lot sharper and more dangerous.

Despite the result, it showed that when Sesko is unavailable, it needs to be Mbeumo who starts there and not Cunha, who really struggled in the opening stages of the season.

Carrick was also impressed by Mbeumo and praised not only his performance but also the versatility he offers.

Speaking after the match, he said: "We know that Bryan [Mbeumo] has excellent qualities.

"He has played in different positions with us. A very good finish from him."

Alarming run of games

After every game in the current four-game winless run, the performances are regarded as the worst of the last decade, but then the next game rolls around and somehow tops it.

The lack of urgency in the first halves of games, or even the inability to take control of games when in the lead, is incredibly alarming. The midfield trio of Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, and Bruno Fernandes needs a change, with Carlos Baleba's cameo today putting him in the running to take Tielemans' spot.

However, this goes beyond just making personnel changes. Carrick needs to make tactical changes, as United are way too passive in every regard. Whether it's the way United press out of possession and Bruno's role in that, or the way the midfield two seem to always jump forward and leave gaps for teams to play through, United need to evolve.

United's fixtures do not get any easier, with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and Leeds United next in the league. Both sides will most likely be chomping at the bit to take on United and will be a real test for Carrick tactically.
