Manchester United will learn their Carabao Cup opponents this evening as the third-round draw takes place.
Manchester United will return to Carabao Cup action very soon, after being out of the competition for almost 12 months.
Last season, United were eliminated by League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties after a 2-2 score in regular time. Bryan Mbeumo missed his penalty, having only recently made the move from Brentford.
The third-round draw takes place tonight (Wednesday) after Preston North End vs Everton. Chelsea and Fulham will take on Luton Town and AFC Wimbledon tomorrow (Thursday) evening, and they will also learn their third-round opponents if they progress.
Who could Man Utd face in the third round?
There will be two draws this evening, as Manchester United will be in a pre-draw before tonight's match to determine which Champions League and Europa League clubs will play at home and which will play away.
The Red Devils will not be able to face any other side in the European competitions to avoid scheduling issues ahead of the third round. This means Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City and Sunderland are off limits for Michael Carrick's side.
However, they could still face any of the other Premier League sides who remain in the competition after the second round.
Manchester United will be ball number six, with 31 other balls to be drawn from the pots after the match.
The draw will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event (Sky channel 401 and Virgin Media channel 501), but will also be shown on the EFL YouTube channel for free.
Man Utd youngsters who could play in the Carabao Cup
For clubs like Manchester United, the Carabao Cup is often a good opportunity for young talent to impress and earn a more regular spot in the first-team squad. There are several high-potential players who could be looking to do the same at Old Trafford,
Shea Lacey came off the bench against Hull City after impressing in pre-season and could be looking for a start in the Carabao Cup.
Another youngster who could feature is JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old made his first-team debut against Atletico Madrid in pre-season and has trained with the senior group under Rúben Amorim and Michael Carrick.
Jack and Tyler Fletcher have both featured under Michael Carrick, with the latter wearing the captain's armband in pre-season, so they will also be pushing for an opportunity in the competition.
Michael Carrick could also use the Carabao Cup to help new signings bed in. Perhaps Carlos Baleba could make his debut in the competition, although he remains injured for the time being.
