Toby Collyer's Manchester United career has been somewhat turbulent over the four years he has spent at the club, and it seems like the academy graduate's time at Old Trafford is coming to an end this summer.

The midfielder joined from Brighton in 2022 and went straight into the academy setup, making his Premier League debut two years later, coming on as a half-time substitute in United's 3-0 loss to Liverpool during the 24/25 campaign.

The now 22-year-old has made 13 first-team appearances for the Red Devils, but spent the majority of last season out on loan, starting at West Brom for the first half of the campaign and then at Hull City for the remainder.

Collyer sustained a long-term injury during his spell with the Baggies, meaning he played only 17 games for both sides. Despite his brief cameos, one of the clubs has entered talks with United to pin down the midfielder on a permanent deal.

West Brom opened their Championship campaign with a 2-1 victory over Norwich City and are looking to build on their impressive start by bolstering their midfield with the addition of Toby Collyer.

According to Ben Jacobs on X, the Championship side is in talks with Manchester United for Collyer, which could see the youngster depart Old Trafford permanently. 

The United prospect made 12 appearances for the Baggies last year, only making the starting eleven on three separate occasions. However, a change of manager and the loss of their starting central midfielder have reignited interest in Collyer.

Despite featuring in Michael Carrick's pre-season squad this summer, it seems likely the Carrington graduate will depart Old Trafford for The Hawthorns, in a move that could seriously kickstart Collyer's career.

Toby Collyer's departure may not seem impactful at first glance, but it is yet another Manchester United midfielder departing ahead of a campaign where rotation is going to play a huge factor.

Last year, the Red Devils failed to get past the first round of both domestic cups and also did not have any European games, so depth was not a priority. However, this season looks set to be one of United's busiest in years, and it seems like a few injuries could derail the whole squad at this moment.

Fans have made their opinions clear regarding the lack of business made by the higher-ups at the club so far, and with the first Premier League fixture quickly approaching, the need for midfield options is becoming more and more apparent.

The current squad should be able to perform sufficiently in the first few gameweeks, but as we approach the winter months, injuries will pop up, and the sign of a successful team is if they have squad depth, which minimises the impact of these scenarios.
