Manchester United's priority this summer has been revamping the midfield. The Reds have already completed the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

United are also keen on strengthening their left-hand side and have been looking at both left-backs and left-wingers.

A new left winger will be dependent on Marcus Rashford leaving. United have made the Carrington graduate available for £40 million, but reports claim he will stay at Old Trafford if no European giant makes a move for him. Should he leave, Crysencio Summerville is high on United's list of targets, but AS Roma are currently in active talks to sign the Dutch winger.

Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu are United's two left-back options, but Dorgu has been regularly utilised on the left wing since Michael Carrick took charge of United in January. While Shaw started every single Premier League game last season, he has a long history of injuries and will likely not be able to play multiple games a week as United prepare for a return to European football.

Due to Shaw's injury problems, Dorgu's long-term future potentially being on the left wing and the need for squad depth because of Champions League football, United are actively surveying the market for a new left-back.

Speaking to The United Stand, Ben Jacobs has revealed three targets that United are considering.

 "Lewis Hall will speak to Eddie Howe and the Newcastle hierarchy, and it's new deal or sale," Jacobs revealed.

"The player is aware of formative interest. Lewis Hall either wants to be a starter for Newcastle or somewhere else.

"I've heard United made an enquiry in April for Carlos Augusto, and they've assessed some young names like Oliver Scarles.

"But the main priority will be trying to find somebody who is a starter and a specialist on that left-hand side."   

While United do need to strengthen the left-hand side, a new centre-back should also be on the agenda, although it will likely have to wait till next summer due to budgets.

Harry Maguire is a great squad player, but he is now at the back end of his career. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are both players with immense potential, but they will need to be given time and patience as they develop.

Matthijs de Ligt has been solid since joining United in 2024 from Bayern Munich, but has not played since November due to a back injury. In addition to injuries, he also has deficiencies on the ball, although he is a good box defender.

Lisandro Martinez is one of the best ball-playing defenders in the world, but he has weaknesses from a defensive point of view. In addition to that, given how the midfield rebuild has gone so far, it has become even more important that United have height and athleticism in their back line, and those are two boxes that Martinez doesn't tick. He has also had multiple major injuries throughout his time at Old Trafford.

Martinez's contract expires next summer, although United have the option to extend it for a further year. They should look to sell this summer while his stock is high following an impressive World Cup campaign and reinvest that money into a centre-back that better suits what United need.
