Manchester United eye teenage sensation JJ Gabriel for a historic debut, while Michael Carrick emerges as the frontrunner for the managerial hot seat.

Shea Lacey should get another chance THIS season!

While Manchester United's first team are focusing on securing Champions League football next season, the Academy is abuzz with the prospect of the next generation of players breaking through.

Currently, the most recent significant graduate is Shea Lacey. Although the English winger most recently played for the U21s, it has been well-established that United now see the 18-year-old as a first-team squad member.

Others, such as Tyler and Jack Fletcher, have also had their chances this campaign, while the U18s are stacked with young talent like Kai Rooney, son of United legend Wayne Rooney, and Noah Ajayi.

However, the most exciting prospect in the Academy right now is young star JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old is widely touted as one of the best prospects across Academy football, with 21 goals and four assists in 24 appearances for the U18S this season.

United hatching Gabriel debut plan

Generally, United follow a pattern of handing first-team debuts to young stars from an early age to keep them hungry and pushing to improve, but only if they are deemed to have earned the chance or if there are no other first-team options.

David Gaskell remains United's youngest-ever player, making his debut as a goalkeeper on October 24, 1956, at just 16 years and 19 days old, although many feel Gabriel could break this record.

According to the Manchester Evening News, while Gabriel was too young at the start of the season to play in the Premier League, United are already hatching plans to give him a first-team chance next campaign, provided the right chance arises.

It's noted that this debut is more likely to occur in a cup competition. If Gabriel were to make his debut before 25 October 2026, which is before the Carabao Cup third round, he would become United's youngest-ever senior player.

Carrick front-runner for United job

At the same time, the Manchester Evening News' report also provides a fresh update on Michael Carrick's future. The United head coach's contract runs only until the end of the season, but his brilliant form has prompted calls for a long-term deal.

It is stated that while sources within the club have maintained they are conducting an exhaustive process to identify the best possible candidate to take over the squad this summer, there are not many great options out there.

With the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Thomas Tuchel, Luis Enrique, and others, all of whom are seen as elite candidates and currently contracted elsewhere, it's said that Carrick has emerged as the frontrunner for the longer-term job.

While the former United midfielder does not have the same level of CV as other managers in world football, the fact that he has had the last few months as bona fide evidence of his ability at Old Trafford no doubt weighs heavily in his favour.
