Manchester United were embarrassed in their Champions League clash against Como this week and Bruno Fernandes appeared to criticise Michael Carrick after the game.

Manchester United were thrashed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, extending their winless run to seven games in all competitions.

United started brightly, with Diogo Dalot firing wide after some neat build-up play inside the opening two minutes. However, Como immediately punished them at the other end, as Harry Maguire gave Nico Paz too much space to cut inside and curl past Senne Lammens to make it 1-0.

Como dominated the first half, limiting United to few chances. Their best opportunity came in the 16th minute when Bryan Mbeumo crossed for Maguire, who headed over from a promising position.

United began the second half aggressively following the introduction of Carlos Baleba, but Como struck again in the 47th minute. Paz drove forward before playing in Anastasios Douvikas, who dinked the ball over Lammens to double the lead.

Things went from bad to worse ten minutes later when Paz found himself through on goal again and calmly slotted past the Belgian goalkeeper. Como then completed the rout as centre-back Jacobo Ramon found space in the box to head home a fourth.

Joshua Zirkzee grabbed a consolation goal in the 91st minute, finishing off an Amad assist, but it was a miserable night for United as they fell to a 4-1 defeat.

Fernandes slams Carrick for tactics vs Como

After another underwhelming display, Bruno Fernandes was substituted early in Italy. The captain was clearly frustrated and explained why in his post match interviews.

The Portuguese midfielder expressed his opinion on how United approached the game when pressing Como, and suggested that they should have been more aggressive in their approach.

Michael Carrick and his coaching team have often veered against high pressing at Old Trafford, partly due to the makeup of the squad. Harry Maguire, for example, is not suited to that approach and it was clear during the second goal on Wednesday night.

Carrick was asked about Bruno's comments and pulled no punches. "We actually half pressed man-to-man in the second half and conceded from that," the head coach said.

"If you don't run, don't run forward and you don't run back you are not going to win."

Fernandes will not be stripped of captaincy

Lisandro Martínez was fined last week for speaking against the United hierarchy, in particular Jason Wilcox, after the defeat to Atletico Madrid.

However, it appears that Fernandes will not face punishment for his perceived criticism of Carrick and his coaching staff.

According to BBC Sport correspondent Simon Stone, Fernandes will remain as the club captain and will not be disciplined for his post-match criticism of the United boss.

It was added that there is sympathy for Fernandes inside the club and while there is disappointment at some of his comments, it is acknowledged that the midfielder's annoyance was understandable given the manner of the defeat.

Despite this, it remains to be seen whether Fernandes will start against Bournemouth on the weekend in what could be Carrick's final game in charge of United if the Reds do not take three points.
