Michael Carrick made eight changes to his starting XI as Manchester United welcomed Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The tie started with United dominating th eball and playing with a lot of intent compared to their previous few fixtures, and within seven minutes, 19-year-old Shea Lacey, making his first-ever senior start, scored a belting goal.

Then, within a few minutes, Mason Mount doubled United's lead with a beautiful bounced effort over the goalkeeper, putting United in firm control of the tie, although their performance slowed after the two goals as Brighton grew into the game.

A late goal in the first half from Charalampos Kostoulas gave the Seagulls hope for the second half, and after a pretty drab 20 minutes after the restart, quick goals from Pascal Groß and Maxim De Cuyper saw Brighton take a sudden lead.

United had plenty of reinforcements enter the field, including Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes, but a lack of urgency and some truly horrid passages of play from the Reds saw them slip to a shocking defeat and crash out of the Carabao Cup.

Karl Darlow – 4/10

Strong opening punches and a commanding presence in the box in the first half, but poor in the second, not filling United with too much confidence.

Diogo Dalot – 3/10

After a poor performance vs Man City, Dalot wasn't particularly notable in the first half and became really sloppy in possession in the second half.

Leny Yoro – 3/10

Looked way too relaxed and slow for Brighton's second and was caught lacking for their third. 

Ayden Heaven – 3/10

Got caught looking over his shoulder for Brighton's first goal and in no-man's-land for their second, but also came clutch with some big tackles and blocks.

Noussair Mazraoui – 3/10

Took a blow that knocked him for a bit, in the first half, and in the second half he looked terrible.

Andrey Santos – 4/10

Lacked aggression and speed, and had little to no inventiveness in the middle of the park.

Youri Tielemans – 5/10

Great first half, but failed to up the tempo when needed in the second, looked as lost as everyone else on the pitch.

Shea Lacey – 8/10

A first start for United, but a player who looks mature beyond his years. Stunning strike to give United an early lead; one of the few who can hold his head high.

Mason Mount – 5/10

First minutes of the season and secured an early goal, but looked fairly anonymous once Brighton took more control.

Marcus Rashford – 4/10

Looks bright, clearly very keen to score his first goal back at United, but missed a brilliant chance in the second half.

Benjamin Šeško – 4/10

Much better to watch United with a clear focal point up front, although must be much more cut-throat with his decision making.
