Manchester United lost in an embarrassing fashion on their Champions League return on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United were embarrassed on their Champions League return as Como won 4-1 in another disgraceful performance by Michael Carrick's side.
Chants of "attack, attack, attack" arrived after 33 minutes. That says it all.
Matthijs de Ligt returned to the starting lineup for the first time in 356 days, but the good feeling was quickly dispelled when Nico Paz found space on the edge of the box and curled a shot into the top-left corner, past Senne Lammens. Paz's goal made Manchester United the first English team to concede in the first two minutes of consecutive major European matches.
United conceded a corner in the 35th minute, after which De Ligt questioned Santos about how Como had so much space. The Brazilian pointed behind him to the front five jogging slowly backwards.
At half-time, Michael Carrick reverted to the 3-5-2 system he used against Leeds United, as the 4-2-4 pressing shape was not working. But Como proved it was not an issue and netted their second just three minutes into the second period.
The Italian side added a third when Carlos Baleba dropped into central defence and gave the ball to Nico Paz 30 yards from goal. There was no stopping the former Real Madrid youngster. Jacobo Ramon soon added a fourth, with Harry Maguire caught way out of position, leaving the back post wide open for the midfielder.
Joshua Zirkzee also found the back of the net just before added time to make it 4-1.
With just minutes left, Carrick brought on Harry Amass and Shea Lacey, having been reluctant to play either so far this season. An uninspiring 4-1 away defeat is no place for youngsters looking for minutes.
It was not the only decision Carrick got wrong on Wednesday evening.
Man Utd Player Ratings
Senne Lammens 5/10
Nothing he could have done about any goal. Might have given away a penalty without the offside flag. Needed some help.
Diogo Dalot 3/10
Not been good enough all season and tonight was another example. Too many mistakes, poor crosses, and silly decisions.
Harry Maguire 3/10
Far too passive and not quick enough to close down Paz for the first goal, nowhere to be seen for the fourth goal. Not good enough.
Matthijs de Ligt 5/10
Good block after 10 minutes, and good to see him back, but made an error which nearly led to Como's third. Not a bad performance, considering its been 356 days since his last appearance.
Noussair Mazraoui 3/10
Beaten too often in the first half and was too slow to press for the second goal after moving over to the right-hand side.
Andrey Santos 5/10
Early booking, but Paz was in had he not brought him down. Hooked at half-time.
Mason Mount 4/10
Tried to start attacks from central midfield, but had no help from those ahead of him. Played like someone lost for ideas.
Bryan Mbeumo 5/10
Improved after being moved down the middle, but did not see the ball enough to have a serious impact on the game.
Youri Tielemans 3/10
Left Fernandes on his own. Could not co-lead the line. Nowhere to be seen in the second half.
Matheus Cunha 5/10
Needed to hold his position on the left wing, but tried to move inside too often and rarely saw the ball.
Bruno Fernandes 4/10
Struggled to get into the game. Understandably, looked uncomfortable attempting to hold the ball up and was visibly frustrated throughout the game and after his substitution.
Substitutes
Amad 6/10
One of the few to look bothered and was a threat in the second half. Good ball to find for Zirkzee.
Carlos Baleba 5/10
Forced to drop into central defence with nobody else progressing play, but gave the ball away to Nico Paz, who could not be stopped.
Joshua Zirkzee 6/10
Good finish.
Harry Amass 6/10
Replaced De Ligt.
Shea Lacey 6/10
Replaced Mbeumo.
