A disastrous first half sees defensive lapses and stagnant creative play leave the Red Devils trailing, as Hull City makes a dream return to the top flight.

Manchester United kicked off their 2026/27 Premier League season with a shock 2-0 loss against Hull City, who are featuring in the Premier League for the first time in a little over nine years.

The tie started with United kicking off in white, with Hull growing into the game well. After 17 minutes, Semi Ajayi was able to strike first despite some good saves from Senne Lammens.

United gained more possession but failed to utilise it, and Hull were able to strike again as centre-back Nobel Mendy headed home a free kick after 38 minutes. At half-time, Marcus Rashford replaced Patrick Dorgu, with Bryan Mbeumo shifting to striker.

United looked a bit brighter in attack in the second half, but there was still no breakthrough in the 65th minute, with Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Šeško then entering the fray.

Despite late pressure and some good play from Rashford, United failed to use any of their possession effectively, leading to a 2-0 loss for Michael Carrick's men to start the season.

United player ratings

Senne Lammens – 6/10

First real action game 15 mins into deny McBernie with a good save. Couldn't do anything for Hull's first. Remained very good with saves in the second half,

Noussair Mazraoui – 3/10

Good defending in the opening minutes, but seemed to be fairly non-existent and uninventive in possession. Gave away a few unneeded fouls.

Harry Maguire – 5/10

Put in a few good crosses but not done too well aerially compared to what's expected.

Ayden Heaven – 6/10

Good in possession and recovered well on multiple occasions. probably United's only consistent player.

Luke Shaw – 4/10

Got forward but failed to do much with the ball, lost his man for Hull's second goal.

Youri Tielemans – 4/10

A slow start to his first competitive game, a few sloppy touches and poor passes. Also gave away the free kick Hull scored their second from. Taken off for Šeško.

Andrey Santos – 5/10

Looked fairly tidy in possession, but yet to get any proper forward balls penetrating the lines. Quiet second half before being replaced by Mainoo

Bruno Fernandes – 4/10

Not much impact on the game; made some very risky passes early in the second half that weren't needed while United tried to regain control.

Bryan Mbeumo – 5/10

Had his fair share of the ball on the right but not able to do too much with it, had a couple of shots saved.

Matheus Cunha – 4/10

Dropped deep often to get on the ball, not really providing the focal point United need up front.

Patrick Dorgu – 3/10

Took far too long to make his decisions and killed multiple attacks on the left wing. Replaced at half-time.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford – 6/10

Coming on after half-time for his first competitive United game in over 600 days, he immediately looked bright. One of United's best players after he came on.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5/10

Failed to impact too much considering that Hull had 11 men behind the ball, needs more match fitness.

Benjamin Šeško – 5/10

Instantly looked to make forward runs after coming on, but United failed to find him.

Diogo Dalot – 3/10

Loss the ball as soon as he came on and had no impact otherwise.

Shea Lacey – N/A

Thrown on as a wildcard option in attack toward the end, but was drowned out and didn't see much of the ball.
