Bryan Mbeumo strikes as Michael Carrick tactical shift to a back five pays dividends in the first half at Elland Road. Discover which stars have shone so far and who struggled in this physical encounter.
Michael Carrick made two changes to his starting XI as Manchester United visited Leeds United for a crunch Premier League clash at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.
In a game that saw Lisandro Martínez start despite his recent comments, United surprisingly set up in a back five. The first 20 minutes were frantic and physical on both ends, but no goals came of it.
However, with 35 minutes on the clock, United snapped into action, with Youri Tielemans finding Bryan Mbeumo with a lovely low cross from the right flank to give the latter a tap-in and the visitors a 1-0 lead at half-time.
However, an early second-half goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled the score, setting up a fiesty finale. Despite both teams being presented with chances to win the game, United's resolute defence shut any further damage out, seeing the game out to a 1-1 draw.
Below are the player ratings for United's players on Sunday afternoon.
United player ratings vs Leeds
Senne Lammens – 7/10
Made some good saves, didn't look phased. No passing out from the back this time.
Amad – 7/10
Amad was deployed as a right wing-back, where he performed well under Rúben Amorim, proved an effective outlet, and shone in the second half.
Leny Yoro – 8/10
Many crosses came Yoro's way, and he was brilliant at deflecting them. Fantastic performance from the centre-back.
Harry Maguire – 7/10
Marshalled United's back line well in the opening half, caught Leeds offside a few times.
Lisandro Martínez – 6/10
Moved gingerly and has some poor passes, but handled the pressure well. Had to go off at half-time due to a knock.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
Playing at left wing-back, he kept a high line and defended well, although was disappointing in the final third.
Carlos Baleba – 7/10
Everywhere in the middle of the park, looking to pass forward whenever possible. Good first league start for United.
Andrey Santos – 6/10
Not had too many touches, but looked to play quick forward passes and won most of his duels.
Youri Tielemans – 7/10
Playing in an advanced role once again, his assist for Mbeumo's first goal was brilliant.
Bruno Fernandes – 5/10
Fernandes started down the middle, pretty much as a striker, and looked a little hot-headed. Didn't get into the game too much.
Bryan Mbeumo – 7/10
Great goal and pressed consistently in the tie, helping set the tone for United's performance.
Substitutes
Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10
Gave away a weak corner just before Leeds' first goal, then defended it poorly as Calvert-Lewin scored. However, an incredible block in added time kept the score level.
Mason Mount – 5/10
Matheus Cunha – N/A
