Persistent injury woes for Benjamin Sesko have left Michael Carrick short of options, yet the Red Devils are distancing themselves from Leeds standout Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Benjamin Sesko has been suffering from a shin injury over the last few months. The striker missed the last three games of last season, as well as the entirety of pre-season.
He returned to action against Hull City in Manchester United's season opener and has featured in every United game so far this season, apart from the 1-1 draw against Fulham.
Sesko missed the Fulham game as his shin injury flared up again after starting against Brighton and Hove Albion, and the striker will also not play for Slovenia during the international break after withdrawing from the squad.
In games Sesko has not started this season, Michael Carrick has typically opted for a front three of Marcus Rashford on the left wing, Matheus Cunha as the centre-forward and Bryan Mbeumo on the right wing.
Without Sesko, United lack a focal point. Reports claimed that United were interested in signing a new centre-forward during the summer transfer window, but nothing materialised.
United not interested in Calvert-Lewin
United have been linked with a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in recent times. The former Everton striker scored 15 goals in all competitions for Leeds United last season and has already found the back of the net four times this season in just seven games.
According to Football Insider, United are not considering a move for Calvert-Lewin despite recent speculation.
Leeds also has no intention of losing the 29-year-old and would be reluctant to sell to a rival.
United are likely to assess alternative targets should they decide to sign a striker in the winter transfer window.
Carrick was let down in the summer
Rashford, Mbeumo, and Cunha lack balance in the front three. Therefore, United must sign a striker in January to add depth at that position.
Sesko is an excellent player with a very high ceiling, but he has had issues with injuries since moving to United. The fact that United decided not to sign a striker in the summer, despite knowing about Sesko's fitness issues, is another example of how Carrick was let down during the summer transfer window.
While Carrick definitely has made mistakes so far this season, the fact that United decided not to sign a left-back or striker despite the lack of depth in those two positions is simply unacceptable.
The United hierarchy claims that they want to win the Premier League by 2028, but the gap to the top is only getting bigger.
If United want to have a decent season, it is crucial that the club strengthen the squad in the winter.
