Manchester United announced three new signings this week, and it comes as no surprise that two of those additions were to strengthen the midfield, after requiring major depth following the departure of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte's ACL injury.

After the deal for Éderson collapsed following a failed medical, United acted quickly to sign Andrey Santos for £50 million from Chelsea, before announcing the shock transfer of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, activating a £35 million release clause included in the Belgian's contract.

It is expected that Michael Carrick will target another midfielder this summer to add further depth ahead of a Champions League campaign next season, but after missing out on several marquee midfield targets, fans will be relieved that INEOS have been able to pull off two midfield signings for a good fee, especially considering the inflated fees that have been seen so far this summer.

As United's summer rebuild goes on, the club are also expected to look at options on the left wing, depending on Marcus Rashford's future, as well as left-back and striker depth if an opportunity arises in the market.

Previous reports have indicated that Manchester United have identified Lewis Hall as their main left-back target this summer, with Michael Carrick pushing for the signing.

While Hall reportedly wants the move, with Newcastle having already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, and with heavy rumours that Bruno Guimarães is looking to join Arsenal, it certainly won't be easy for Manchester United to pry away another key first-team player from the club.

Perhaps that is the reason that, according to Fichajes, United are interested in signing Inter Milan's Carlos Augusto to provide direct competition with Luke Shaw next season.

At the peak of his career, the 27-year-old has plenty of experience and could prove to be a great bit of business from INEOS, with the defender expected to cost around £25 million.

With Juventus and Roma interested, it remains to be seen whether United will win the race for his signature, but the allure of the Premier League could give them a key advantage over other clubs.

Having previously made inquiries for Augusto, it's clear that United have had a long-standing interest in the versatile defender who can operate as both a wing-back and full-back.

The outlet also reports that should negotiations stall for financial reasons, United are also considering 20-year-old West Ham defender Oliver Scarles as a medium-term development option, and would understandably cost much less than Augusto.

However, the signing of Scarles represents a serious risk, as it remains to be seen whether he is ready for first-team football should Luke Shaw suffer an injury.

At just 21 years old, Lewis Hall has already made 84 Premier League and 11 Champions League appearances, and despite the substantial fee that it will take to get him out of the North East, Hall would be the perfect left-back signing for United this summer, being able to learn under Shaw, before becoming the starting left-back and locking down that position for years to come.
