Michael Carrick's side stagnated at Old Trafford as Spurs stifled their creative engine. With chance creation stalling, United must find new attacking solutions beyond their talismanic captain.

Man Utd return from the international break with a poor 1-1 draw to SpursMore Videos

Manchester United made it six points in six Premier League games after a disappointing 1-1 draw with 10 men Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

A slow start from Michael Carrick's men saw an onslaught of Spurs pressure, with huge chances falling to Dominic Solanke and Savio early on. A big save from Senne Lammens and a huge block from Kobbie Mainoo kept United's goal empty.

An encouraging introduction from Carlos Baleba sparked some excitement in the crowd, with the 22-year-old boosting the quality of the side immediately, as United eventually opened the scoring.

Bryan Mbeumo made it 1-0 to the home side, squeezing his effort into the far corner, beating Antonin Kinsky for the first time and handing United the advantage with 73 minutes played.

A brawl between Luke Shaw and Rodrigo Bentancur followed shortly after, resulting in the Tottenham midfielder receiving a red card for a headbutt on the United fullback, reducing Spurs to ten men as United attempted to see the game out.

But history repeated itself as once again Carrick's side conceded to ten men thanks to a dangerous cross from Sandro Tonali finding Solanke, who somehow escaped Lisandro Martinez in the 92nd minute, drawing the game level and securing a point for both sides.

Man Utd too reliant on Bruno Fernandes

The first half was undeniably some of Manchester United's worst football this season, with the players unable to pose any threat to the Spurs' defence. Talisman Bruno Fernandes is typically at the centre of all United attacks, but the Portuguese international struggled to make his mark early on against Spurs.

It took 23 minutes for Bruno to make his first pass of the game, making it clear how often United are too reliant on his creative spark to conjure any attacks. De Zerbi's approach of suffocating Fernandes out of the game completely silenced United in the final third.

United's only Premier League win this season came at the hands of Bruno Fernandes, who dropped a hat-trick on newly promoted Ipswich Town in a 5-2 win. Otherwise, United have struggled when it comes to chance creation this season.

This leaves a clear blueprint for upcoming opponents on how to keep Carrick's forwards quiet. When looking at United's bench, the biggest standout option to step into Bruno's role would be Mount, who has struggled to cement himself in the squad since his move in 2023.

Where Else Can United Create Chances?

When playing against Manchester United, opponents have seen great joy from crosses, with Manchester City and Spurs proving to be prime examples of this.

If United had the consistent availability of Benjamin Sesko, this could be a possible route to creating chances, given the Slovenian's ability in the air. Apart from that, Today's game proved the lack of speed in United's front line, apart from Mbeumo.

Darting runs in behind were attempted on multiple occasions in the game, but only Mbeumo reached the end of them. Meanwhile, Amad and Matheus Cunha could not find a breakthrough or maintain the speed to forge a shot.

With three huge away games coming up against Atletico Madrid, Leeds United and Como, could United look towards the likes of Rashford, who has more of an eagerness to run in behind defences? Baleba already delivered multiple through balls in the short amount of time on the pitch, and a forward-thinking player like Youri Tielemans should be more than capable of feeding these types of passes as well.
