A controversial Erling Haaland goal gave 10-man Manchester City the win at Old Trafford, as Michael Carrick’s Manchester United failed to capitalise on a crucial man advantage.
Manchester United suffered their second defeat of the Premier League season against Manchester City at Old Trafford, as Haaland gave Enzo Maresca's team a 1-0 win.
Michael Carrick's side were handed a man advantage when Phil Foden was sent off after 22 minutes for kicking Bruno Fernandes in the stomach while on the ground, but struggled to make it count and went into the break at 0-0.
Erling Haaland controversially opened the scoring on the hour mark, despite looking clearly offside in open play and after a replay. A lengthy VAR check awarded the goal, much to the bemusement of everyone inside Old Trafford. The Norwegian was deemed onside, but Enzo Fernández's attempt (from an offside position) at the ball seemed enough to distract Lisandro Martínez.
"The way you treat us is a disgrace," said United fans on a banner about the ownership, although that could've also been directed at their frustrations towards VAR.
With Luke Shaw absent through injury, Patrick Dorgu started as the left-back, having played there for the first time under Michael Carrick against Sabah FK on Thursday evening. Matheus Cunha also kept his place through the middle, despite Benjamin Šeško scoring his first of the campaign in the Champions League. Marcus Rashford and Bryan Mbeumo started on either side of the Brazilian.
Player Ratings
Senne Lammens – 6/10
Made an excellent save in the second half to keep the score at 1-0, having been untested for much of the game. Couldn't do anything about Haaland's goal.
Diogo Dalot – 5.5/10
Struggled to handle Antoine Semenyo in the first half, and would've hoped for better on his 250th Manchester United appearance.
Harry Maguire – 6.5/10
Played a brilliant switch to Marcus Rashford after nine minutes and continued his impressive passing throughout the 90'. Silly yellow card.
Lisandro Martínez – 7/10
Proved his height wasn't an issue and kept Haaland quiet for much of the 90 minutes. Couldn't have done anything about the goal, given that he was distracted by an offside Enzo Fernández.
Patrick Dorgu – 6/10
Forced back to left-back with Shaw still absent, but handled Phil Foden well until his early dismissal. Also saw Cherki subbed off at half-time.
Youri Tielemans – 6.5/10
Brought off for Šeško after 67 minutes, but would have stayed on the pitch had it not been for the goal. Anchored the midfield well alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10
Had a brilliant effort from 25 yards out, which struck Donnarumma's left post in front of the Stretford End. Continued to marshal the midfield well alongside Youri Tielemans.
Bryan Mbeumo – 6/10
Tough shift against Gvardiol. Could've scored in the 94th minute to earn a point, but Donnarumma made a terrific save.
Bruno Fernandes – 7/10
Played a brilliant ball through the lines to Rashford. Struggled to impact the game as much after dropping deeper.
Marcus Rashford – 7/10
Took a heavy hit early on from Elliot Anderson. Looked like Manchester United's biggest threat until he was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee.
Matheus Cunha – 6/10
Caused Manchester City an issue when dropping deep from centre-forward, but struggled to have as much of an impact after the red card.
Substitues
Benjamin Šeško – 6/10
Struggled to get into the game after coming on for Tielemans.
Joshua Zirkzee – 6/10
Replaced Rashford.
