Following his Scudetto-winning transformation into a Napoli superstar, academy graduate Scott McTominay could make a dramatic return to Old Trafford as Premier League rivals circle the Scottish midfielder.
Transfer rumours are already ramping up for Manchester United, as the underwhelming start to the season leaves much to be desired.
Fans were crying out for defensive reinforcements, but INEOS and the recruitment team opted to overhaul the midfield with three new signings.
Andrey Santos arrived on a shock move from Chelsea and featured in the first game against Hull. Your Tielemans made his debut in the same game and has featured prominently since, but United fans have yet to see Carlos Baleba on the pitch.
But one more midfielder may be open to a return, as he's become a superstar in Italy, though the Reds will have to fend off Premier League rivals Aston Villa to sign him.
United monitor McTominay
United academy graduate Scott McTominay left United in 2024 for Serie A giants Napoli and has since risen to stardom.
His two seasons with The Partenopei have been excellent: he scored 27 goals and recorded seven assists in 87 games and was named Napoli footballer of the year in their 2025 title-winning campaign.
Sports Witness has reported that the midfielder will surely leave Napoli at the end of the 2027 summer, when his contract expires, as the Italian giants do not want to pay a high wage for a player over 30, which McTominay will be soon.
Napoli value McTominay at roughly £22 million, a loss compared with the approximate £25 million United paid for him in 2024.
A return to England seems on the cards, with United making an enquiry about the Scotsman last summer; Aston Villa did the same, as did many other top European clubs.
McTominay did not leave Napoli in the summer because his situation with the club was very secure at the time.
What would a return to England look like for McTominay?
After an impressive end to his spell at United, McTominay has become one of the best players in Serie A and helped Napoli become champions for the second time in three years.
The last time McTominay featured for United was in a 2-1 loss to Brighton in August of 2024, when former manager Erik ten Hag was in charge.
Under the Dutch manager, McTominay scored ten goals and recorded three assists in his last full season, operating as a box-crashing central midfielder
Michael Carrick plays a formation similar to Ten Hag's, with a traditional attacking midfielder and a pair of deeper midfielders to sweep up. McTominay would fit the current system.
Although it's unlikely McTominay would walk straight into the current starting eleven, his influence could still be crucial, despite United's recent influx of midfielders.
