There was plenty of controversy on Friday night as Manchester United drew 2-2 against Bournemouth, and Michael Carrick's side are not happy with the officials.

Man Utd are RIGHT to launch a 'formal complaint' to PGMOL

Manchester United began the match with real intensity, creating early opportunities for players like Bruno Fernandes and Amad.

As the game progressed, the home side settled into it, with Senne Lammens making a strong save at his near post to deny a low strike from Rayan.

Michael Carrick’s team took the lead from the penalty spot after Matheus Cunha was clearly fouled in the box. Fernandes stepped up and finished calmly.

Soon after, Amad appeared to be fouled inside the area as well, but referee Stuart Attwell chose not to award a second penalty, seemingly reluctant to make another big call so quickly.

Bournemouth capitalised shortly after, pushing forward to grab an equaliser. Although VAR reviewed the situation, the original decision stood.

United reacted immediately, regaining the lead when Fernandes delivered a corner that ended up in the net after taking a touch off James Hill.

The match remained eventful, though, as Evanilson was later ruled to have been fouled by Harry Maguire in the United box. Maguire was shown a straight red card—a decision that raised eyebrows, especially given the earlier incident involving Amad.

Carrick responded with tactical changes, and despite being reduced to 10 men, United managed to hold on and secure a valuable point under difficult circumstances.

Man Utd to issue 'formal complaint' to PGMOL

Every week in the Premier League there seem to be inconsistencies across matches, but you rarely see two identical penalty shouts go opposite ways in the same game.

That is what happened at the Vitality Stadium and Carrick made his feelings clear on the situation after full-time.

"He has given one penalty for us for a two-armed grab and the second one for Amad he doesn't... it's almost identical," the United boss explained.

"For me, it's two penalties and it's a huge moment. Baffling."

It appears that Carrick is being supported by those in charge at Old Trafford, with reports emerging that the club are set to launch a 'formal' complaint to the PGMOL about two incidents in the game.

Alongside the penalty decision against Amad, Ben Jacobs has reported that United are also unhappy about nine minutes being added on at the end of the game while the Reds were down to 10 men.

There were hardly any stoppages in the second half and the only VAR check - for the foul on Amad - was surprisingly quick.  "There was some added time that we haven't seen for a while," Carrick added.

The aforementioned report added that United officials are 'furious' by what they believe is ‘yet another VAR blunder’ that has cost their side.

Stuart Attwell's history with Man Utd

Stuart Attwell was the match referee for this encounter and it was his first time leading a game involving the Reds since the 2-2 draw against Burnley under Darren Fletcher in January.

In that game, Attwell disallowed a goal from Lisandro Martínez and PGMOL later apologised for that decision being wrong. He also missed a clear stamp on Patrick Dorgu from Kyle Walker midway through the game.

United fans have also recalled a game against Chelsea from the 2020/21 campaign where Luke Shaw said that Attwell had admitted the Reds should have had a penalty, but that he did not want to cause controversy by awarding it.

The referee has cost United four points in two games this season, and it would be extremely surprising if he officiated another match involving the Reds before the campaign concludes.
