As the Manchester United manager addresses his rivals’ historic financial breaches, he urges his struggling squad to prioritize internal recovery over the unfolding chaos surrounding the champions.

A few weeks ago, during the early days of the international break, it was revealed that Manchester City had been found guilty of 114 charges of breaching the Premier League's rules.

It had long been alleged that Manchester United's fierce rivals had been engaging in financial doping, skirting financial rules to inflate sponsorship values and pump undeclared money into the club to accelerate their rise to the top.

United, across the same period, have suffered greatly, winning no Premier League or Champions League titles, while City saw unprecedented levels of success under Pep Guardiola, including becoming the second English club to win the famed treble.

With this coming weekend being the first weekend since news broke of Man City's £900 million in disguised payments, plenty of Premier League managers, including United boss Michael Carrick, have been asked for their thoughts.

Carrick speaks on City's verdict

Michael Carrick's playing career spanned from before City's success to the start of their dominance, and he has watched City become the dominant force in Manchester since then.

Now, as United's manager, and given his glittering playing career, his opinion on the matter is of particular interest.

Speaking on Friday afternoon ahead of United's clash against Tottenham Hotspur, Carrick said, "Difficult to say in many ways. It's thrown up a lot of questions.

"It's ongoing, and there's only so much I can say. I have my own questions about it because it has affected me personally. We'll have to see how it goes. The sooner it gets sorted for everyone, the better.

"There's no getting that back [winning moments] in any direction. The feeling we all crave is coming out on top. That sums it up. Whatever is done in the past, is done in the past."

When asked about the other league clubs learning about an outcome for City, Carrick urged for speed to be a key part. "Speed is essential, as I just said," he continued.

"That's obvious for me to sit here and say that. There are so many angles, but speed is essential for everybody to be clear, to deal with it, and move on. It's unprecedented to be in this situation at this level. We all need to know what is going to happen."

Carrick also admitted that, having lost the 2011/12 campaign to City on the final day, even if he were to be retrospectively granted the medal, it wouldn't take away the pain he felt on that final day.

"I think it doesn't change how you feel in that moment," Carrick said when asked about awarding the trophies to those who missed out each season.

"You can't take it back, so whichever way this goes, and I don't really want to speak about which way it could go, but whether we did end up getting... [a trophy], it doesn't change that moment, we can't get it back.

"I think at the moment, it's not finalised. I think I'll hold that one [if other teams should be handed City's titles] until later on. It's the moment that you strive for. A medal here and there does not bring the feeling back for winning."

United cannot let City's problems distract them

While City's verdict may satisfy fans' sense of justice, United cannot let the unfolding situation distract them from their task at hand.

Whether or not City faces punishment, which could range from financial penalties and a points deduction to stripped titles and expulsion from the Premier League, United must focus on steadying their own ship.

With only one win in their first five league fixtures, the Reds are in dire need of collecting points and climbing up the table from their current 12th-place position ahead of upcoming ties against Spurs, Leeds United, and Bournemouth.

Having already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, United must also prove themselves in the Champions League, with ties against Atletico Madrid, Como, and Roma coming up in the next month.
