Manchester United signed Harry Amass from Watford in the summer of 2023 to bolster their academy setup.

Amass, now 19, immediately impressed in the Under-18s and was a major part of a treble-winning side that season. He also already had experience on Watford's first-team bench in the FA Cup.

The left-back continued to impress as he moved into the Under-21s and made a handful of appearances under Ruben Amorim in the 2024/25 campaign.

It was then decided that Amass would benefit from a loan move but questions were raised when he was sent to Sheffield United due to the turbulence around the Championship club last season.

Despite this, the defender excelled and was the standout performer for Wednesday until he departed the loan early in January to move to Norwich City. Unfortunately for the academy talent, an injury early on in that spell ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Amass returned to action this summer for United and looked sharp during pre-season but reports emerged that he could be departing the club permanently this summer.

It is no secret that United are looking for a left-back to sign in the final days of the window to help Luke Shaw, who is the only senior player in that position within Michael Carrick's squad.

However, it remains to be seen whether Amass could provide depth in that position at Old Trafford. When asked about the 19-year-old's future, Carrick refused to rule anything out.

"It comes to this stage and this is the stage of the window, there is always different scenarios," the United boss told journalists on Friday afternoon. "We try and do the best for each individual player while keeping the group strong."

It feels like a strange case with Amass as he had impressed throughout the summer and that is an opinion that Carrick echoed.

"We’ve been really pleased with Harry," Carrick continued. "He had a really good season that didn't end so well with the injury, he’s done really well in pre-season."

Some reports have even suggested that Amass could be sold for as little as £7 million, which has caused some debate amongst supporters.

There are clearly some internal doubts about whether Amass can take the necessary steps to playing in the Premier League for United.

He is a young defender and will undoubtably make mistakes, but you will never truly know if someone is ready until they have a chance.

Ayden Heaven is now a genuine option for United at centre-back but no one knew if he could cope at the level when he joined from Arsenal in January last year.

Plus, if he sticks around and is not at the required level, Amass will gain Premier League experience and become a more valuable asset for United next summer.

United will make their decision in the coming days but it definitely seems like left-back will be the position to keep an eye on this season.
